FishPass FishPass is the capstone project in the Boardman/Ottaway River Restoration in Traverse City, MI.

The mission of FishPass is to provide up- and down-stream passage of desirable fishes while simultaneously blocking and /or removing undesirable fishes. FishPass will replace the deteriorating Union Street Dam in downtown Traverse City, Michigan with an improved barrier featuring a fish-sorting channel and a nature-like river channel. FishPass will be the capstone of a ~20 year restoration project on the Boardman (Ottaway) River, re-connecting the Boardman River with Lake Michigan. Once FishPass is constructed, scientists will optimize various sorting technologies and techniques below the barrier to maximize efficiency of passing desirable fishes and removing invasive fishes. The result will be a world-class technology and research center in a park-like setting.

150+ neighbors, artists, students, tribal members, reporters, and Michigan Municipal League Convention attendees visited FishPass this week! We fielded great questions. Took selfies. Did impressions of a swimming 6 ft Lake Sturgeon while singing Sade (IYKYK). Got in our steps.

“…Arctic grayling haven’t been seen in Michigan waters for almost a century as industrial activity decimated their numbers — but northern Michigan tribes and the state are trying to change that.”

Northern Michigan tribes are releasing Arctic grayling for the second year in a row, in hopes of restoring the native freshwater species. Questions remain about how many have already survived and how to adapt to shifting weather from climate change.

The bridge design has elements similar to other bridges along the Boardman/Ottaway River. When FishPass is complete, we can hike, bike, stroll, or roll the shoreline of this system from upstream to the bay!
