Grand Rapids is about to make your backyard way more interesting.

The city's working on new rules — expected to kick in next year — that would let you build a backyard home (an ADU) up to 1,000 sq ft. That's bigger than today's limits, with a lot less red tape, and enough room for a real one- or two-bedroom: rental income, a spot for the in-laws, a home office, or a place to downsize into while you rent out the main house.

The proposed changes would increase maximum floor area to 1,000 square feet and remove the two-bedroom cap on accessory dwelling units.

Tile is up next, then final paint and countertops—aka the stage where everything really starts to feel like a home. Lots of little details coming together behind the scenes right now and we’re excited to see it all take shape.

We’ve been making solid progress on our Cedar, Michigan build and it’s starting to feel like a home.

Windows and doors are in, insulation inspection is behind us, and the shiplap walls are up and looking good. Next step is the tongue and groove ceiling, which is going to tie everything together.

Fun stage of the build where it all starts to click.

Big progress on our Beulah addition & remodel this week!

The tongue and groove walls, ceilings, and collar ties are finished — and honestly, this space is already something special. There's something about all that warm wood grain that makes a house feel like a home before it's even done.

This week we're painting and laying flooring. Next week? Cabinets and tile go in — and we cannot wait. Think moody green entryway, a new hallway, polished nickel fixtures, plaid mosaic flooring, and a deep burgundy shower. It's going to be bold.

Well, well, well... guess what we're up to?

We're back at our Cedar project — the 692 sq ft tiny home that needed some help getting across the finish line.

Today's milestone: getting the well drilled so this 2 bed/2 bath can finally have running water. You know, that thing most people consider pretty essential. Thanks Cluff Well Drilling!

There's something satisfying about taking a project and bringing it to life. This homeowner deserves a finished home, and we're here to make sure they get it.
