Labor Day weekend: for most of us, it's one more long weekend before summer's really over — a cookout, time with family and friends, maybe one last chance to get an outside project done. But it started out as something else entirely. 🚧
The first Labor Day was celebrated on September 5, 1882, in New York City, when thousands of workers marched to honor the people whose labor was building the country. It took over a decade before Congress made it official — President Grover Cleveland signed it into federal law in 1894.
Over 130 years later, most folks aren't thinking about that history on a three-day weekend. But the idea behind it hasn't gone anywhere. It's still a day to recognize the people who show up and do the work — the crews, the contractors, the ranchers, and everyone here in Box Elder County who builds something with their hands.
