Today on , we’re celebrating the incredible biodiversity that makes places like John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge At Tinicum so extraordinary. As America’s First Urban Refuge, Heinz protects more than 1,200 acres of vital habitat, including Pennsylvania’s last remaining freshwater tidal marsh, and supports a remarkable range of species.

Our team is proud to contribute to ongoing restoration efforts within the Refuge’s Turkey Foot area, where we’re working alongside partners to enhance wetland, riparian, and upland habitats that support species of conservation concern, including the federally threatened Eastern Black Rail.

And because wildlife always tells the story best, we’re excited to share a selection of just a few of the remarkable species found throughout John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge; including the glossy ibis, least bittern, snapping turtle, and marsh wren. These stunning on‑site photographs were captured by Princeton Hydro Vice President Mark Gallagher.

We’re grateful to collaborate with John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge and Friends of Heinz Refuge at Tinicum as we continue supporting habitat restoration and community education.

Join us on September 24 during Riverfront North Partnership's Learn to Fish program for a public discussion about the recent collaborative study of the six ponds at Pleasant Hill Park.

Princeton Hydro has been working with Philadelphia Parks & Recreation and Riverfront North Partnership to help sustain and advance restoration efforts for the park's historic six-pond system and fish hatchery. During the event, we'll share insights from the pond study and discuss the ecological value of these unique aquatic resources.

Whether you're an experienced angler or brand new to fishing, this is a great opportunity to learn more about the ponds, the fish that inhabit them, and ongoing efforts to support their long-term health.

We were excited to follow the inaugural Fat Marmot Week, organized by the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, and congratulate Dawn on being crowned champion! Dawn finished the season at 13 pounds after gaining 4.5 pounds in preparation for winter hibernation.

What started as a fun celebration has also helped bring attention to RMBL's Marmot Project, which has been studying yellow-bellied marmots since 1962 and is among the longest-running studies of wild mammals in the world.

Princeton Hydro is sponsoring the 2026 Society For Ecological Restoration (SER) Mid-Atlantic Conference! The conference will be held on September 24-25 at the Temple University Ambler Campus. Be sure to stop by our sponsor table and say hi!

✅Vice President, Mark Gallagher is leading a presentation about the John A. Roebling Memorial Park Tidal Wetland Restoration project.
✅Director of Marketing & Communications, Dana Patterson Grear is presenting on “Beyond the Public Meeting: How Stakeholder Engagement Improves Ecological Restoration Outcomes.
✅Director of Aquatics, Michael Hartshorne is leading a poster presentation about the Urban Flood and Habitat Resilience Feasibility Study in Philadelphia’s Lower Darby Creek Area, which includes portions of the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge.
✅Ecologist and Senior Project Manager, Duncan Simpson, PWS, is leading a poster presentation on “Reconnecting Hibernia Brook: Restoration Following Hudsonia Dam Removal.”

The conference is centered around the theme of Delaware Valley Restoration. The first day of the conference will include presentations featuring two all-star keynote speakers: Beth Styler Barry, Director of Freshwater Programs at The Nature Conservancy in New Jersey and Ray Hinkle, Senior Technical Director for AKRF Inc. There will also be an Ecological Restoration Career Path Panel for students/emerging professionals. The first day of the conference will conclude with a happy hour/networking event.

The second day of the conference will feature field trips to four local restoration projects: FDR Park, Cramer-Hill, Pennypack Trust, and Cobbs Creek. Through these projects attendees will get to see examples of stream, wetland (tidal and freshwater), meadow, and forest restoration. Transportation will be provided to each of these locations, and a box lunch will also be provided.

Ecological monitoring means paying attention to the details.

While conducting biodiversity monitoring in the grasslands of southwestern Montana, members of the Cultivo and Princeton Hydro teams documented an incredible array of wildlife that help tell the story of ecosystem health.

These photos, captured by Mike McGraw, CSE, QAWB, ACE, Tanya Dapkey, CE and Eric Zawatski, CWB offer a glimpse into the species observed. Each observation contributes to a broader understanding of habitat quality, ecological function, and landscape resilience.

Featured here are a burrowing owl, thick-billed longspur, Brewer's sparrow nest, a spearleaf stonecrop, native pollinators, and pronghorns roaming Montana's grasslands.

A special thank you to Sean Leslie and Cultivo for their partnership and for helping tell the story of this important work.
