Construction of the Interstate Circle bridge over Eight Mile Creek is underway in Escambia County. The original bridge was opened in 1970, and the new, wider structure being built will meet future transportation needs and comply with current standards.

The bridge deck is the flat surface of a bridge used by motorists. Bridge deck construction consists of several key phases including:

➡ Installation of the Florida Slab Beams onto the abutments and bridge bent.

➡ Installation of overhang forms and reinforcing steel, called “rebar.”

➡ Placing and leveling concrete to ensure required elevation or grade.

➡ Curing of the concrete until proper strength of the bridge deck is attained.

Completion of the $3.6 million Interstate Circle bridge over Eight Mile Creek bridge replacement project is currently estimated for mid-2025.

In May 2024, FDOT began a $3.6 million project to replace the Interstate Circle bridge over Eight Mile Creek in Pensacola. Currently, the bridge deck of the new structure is being constructed, with project completion currently estimated for mid-2025.

In this photo, crew members place concrete over reinforcing steel, or “rebar,” to form the deck, or driving surface, of the bridge. The rebar increases the tensile strength of the concrete and helps it resist cracking and breaking.

The project is part of FDOT’s continued effort to improve traffic flow and increase safety on state roadways. The new Interstate Circle Bridge over Eight Mile Creek will be a modernized structure equipped with improved travel lanes, shoulders, and railing to accommodate current and future traffic needs.
