🌲 Roots of Rex Lumber | Part 6: The Matriarch

Behind 100 years of Rex Lumber history is a family story, and few people witnessed more of it than Annie Camie McRae.

From the early lumber years with her husband, W.D., to watching their sons carry Rex Lumber into the next generation, Annie's lifetime spanned an extraordinary chapter of the McRae family story.

After W.D.'s death in 1949, Annie remained the family's matriarch for another four decades. Family recollections remember her for her quiet strength and gentleness, her generosity and common sense, and the importance she placed on keeping family close.

Her life was filled with the things that often don't make it into company histories: gardens and preserves, sewing and quilting, master pie baker, music, church, neighbors and family gatherings. Yet those are often the very things from which a lasting family legacy is built.

Annie lived from 1889 to 1990, reaching her 101st birthday and seeing the family business continue into new generations.

Today, as Rex Lumber celebrates its own century mark, her story reminds us that family owned is more than something written beneath a logo. It's a legacy carried from one generation to the next. 🌲

We’re headed to Buckmasters! 🌲

The Rex Lumber Troy team will be at the Buckmasters Expo in Montgomery this weekend, and we’d love for you to stop by and see us.

We’ll have plenty of goodies for the kids, including coloring books, balloons, kids hard hats, and more. And for the kids at heart, we’ll have the co****le boards set up and ready for a little friendly competition!

Bring the family, come say hello and see if you can beat one of our Rex Lumber team members at a game or two.

A successful training program is about more than what happens in the classroom. It’s about where the experience can lead.

This summer, students at the Rex Lumber Training Center had the opportunity to learn, grow and gain hands-on experience while exploring careers in the lumber industry.

Now, eight Summer School graduates are beginning their careers at Rex Lumber.

Seeing students take what they learned and turn it into the beginning of a career is an exciting outcome for our Summer School program. We’re grateful to everyone who invested their time and knowledge into making the experience possible.

Congratulations to the graduates as they begin this next chapter! 🌲

🌲 Roots of Rex Lumber | Part 5

The Great Depression challenged businesses across America, and Rex Lumber was no exception.

As banks failed and cash became difficult to obtain during the Great Depression, Doo-Ga-Loos helped employees purchase everyday necessities while the company weathered difficult times.

By March 8, 1937, Rex Lumber had returned to operating double shifts, and employees were once again being paid in cash at the end of every shift.

For nearly 100 years, resilience has been part of our story.

A summer of learning, hard work and hands-on experience has come to a close. 🎓

Our 2026 students have officially graduated from our Summer Boot Camp at the Rex Lumber Training Facility. Class instructor Chuck Ellis of Reliability Solutions presented each student with their certificate and an individual award recognizing a strength they exhibited during the training.

We're grateful for the opportunity to watch these students develop new skills, take on challenges and grow throughout the summer.

Congratulations, graduates! We're proud of what you've accomplished. 🌲

🌲 Roots of Rex Lumber | Part 4

Every great company is built on more than people and products. It is built on the investments that make growth possible.

In 1926, McRae Lumber & Manufacturing Company ordered a Vulcan 2-6-2 Prairie locomotive to strengthen its expanding railroad operation. Completed in 1927, this engine helped move timber from the forests to the mill, supporting the growth of what would become Rex Lumber.

Nearly 100 years later, this very locomotive still exists as Cliffside No. 110, preserving a remarkable piece of Rex Lumber's early history.

For railroad enthusiasts, it is a surviving steam locomotive. For us, it is another connection to our roots.

🌲 Roots of Rex Lumber | Part 3

A company's legacy isn't measured only by the lumber it produced, but by what was built with it.

In Rex Lumber's early years, oak flooring became one of the company's signature products. Millions of square feet left our Graceville mill and found their way into homes, businesses, and public buildings across the country.

Today, while we proudly produce Southern Yellow Pine lumber, many of those original oak floors are still in service, some still bearing the Rex Lumber stamp as a reminder that quality craftsmanship was built to last.

For 100 years, our products may have evolved, but our commitment to quality has remained the same.
