How to reduce your risk of radon exposure
If you are worried about radon in your home (or more importantly the risk of lung cancer from overlong exposure to radon) there are a number of steps you can take to quickly, and in most cases cheaply, reduce the amount of radon in the home.

1. If you are a smoker STOP. If you live in the house with a smoker encourage them to give up the habit. This should reduce your familys chances of developing lung cancer from either cigarette smoke or radon.

2. If you know that key areas of the house (such as the basement, attic, or crawlspace) have a higher concentration of radon, spend less time in these areas. If you are not sure about radon levels in your home contact a radon mitigation specialist or purchase a home test kit.

3. Increase the flow of air through the house by keeping windows and fans on (weather permitting) allowing any radon gasses that may have migrated up through the house to dissapate.

What is radon?
A naturally occurring gas that rises from the earth, radon, is one of the densest forms of gas found on the planet. Completely colorless, odorless and tasteless radon can accumulate in small enclosed spaces (such as basements, attics, and crawlspaces) where, due to its extreme radioactivity, its long term presence can become a serious health hazard. According to EPA studies radon can be linked to occurrences of lung cancer (in areas where radon concentration is high enough) with a fatality rate of 21,000 deaths per year in the US alone making it one of the worlds most hazardous indoor air contaminants.

Does every home have radon?
Because of the high level of concern over the question of radon made these days by home owners, realtors, and new home buyers more and more people are wondering if their homes are safe or secretly irradiating them. People are anxious to know, is radon a problem afflicting every home? The answer, is no.

While it is true that today, more homes in the US are found to have higher than acceptable levels of radon then in years previous, most houses in this country are not likely to have a serious radon problem. Because radon is an odorless, invisible gas it can be hard to know whether or not your home is exposing you to toxic substances. So if you are concerned about high indoor levels of radon give us at Foothills Crawlspace a call for a free inspection and radon test.

How long has radon been a problem?
Radon gas is, and has always been, present in the air and water in varying levels across the globe. It has only been in the last fifty years or so that concerns about high concentrations of radon in homes and indoor areas (after homes were discovered that had been built using materials contaminated by waste products produced in uranium mines). These days, more than a few homes have SOME concentration of radon as a result of widespread industrial activity or natural deposits of uranium in the soil on which said homes were constructed.

How does radon cause lung cancer?
Radon is a naturally occuring byproduct of the earth that results from the breakdown and decay of various radioactive particles. When you breath in radon (or drink it if your well or water levels contain high levels of radon), the radon decay particles can become trapped in your lungs and, as these particles continue to break down and decay inside you, they release small bursts of radioactive energy that can cause severe damage to lunge tissue and in some instances lead to cancer.

What Are The Risks of Radon Exposure
We know that radon gas is extremely radioactive and that it rises from the earth. In order to study this pollutant, scientists conduct studies of miners exposed to varying levels of radon in the course of their work underground and express the risks of exposure to radon as a range of numbers. Despite some continued uncertanty when it comes to radon scientists ARE sure that: the longer ones exposure to radon, the greater your risk of developing lung cancer.
