Once the spacecraft arrives at the asteroid in 2026, plans call for it to spend 21 months at the asteroid, performing science operations from four staging orbits, which become successively closer. Because of the special trajectory, the probe needs on route to Psyche, NASA's first decision was to launch the mission with the Space Launch System (SLS), but because of lower cost, the decision was then made to launch with a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.
