Never judge a book by its cover. Which can be said about this nearly 110-year-old logbook of Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) pilot G. A. Wright during the Great War.

It not only contains personal notes from an organization seldom covered in the history of the first air war, but it also records Wright's personal involvement in escorting the British occupation force into Constantinople on 13 November 1918. A few months later, he would be above Sevastopol flying in support of Allied and White Russian forces against the Bolsheviks. The combination of rare factors, RNAS experience, the Russian Civil War, and detailed accounts of naval aviation makes this logbook a truly historical piece.

Tucson’s winds were breaking records, but our Fall Break Campers were breaking the SOUND BARRIER! 🚀

While the wind howled outside, our campers took flight indoors! They explored supersonic aircraft, soared through flight simulators, and discovered the science behind high-speed flight. 🛩️💨

Our staff were blown away (see what we did there? 😉) by their curiosity, creativity, and ingenuity. We can’t wait to welcome these future aviators back!

Today we are highlighting our display on Vice Admiral Nora Tyson. Part of our Women in Flight Exhibit, the items on display tell the story of Admiral Tyson’s naval career.

Commissioned in the US Navy in 1979, Admiral Tyson had many firsts during her 38-year career. Tyson became the first woman to command the forward Singapore-deployed Task Force 73; the first woman to command a carrier strike group; and the first woman to command a navy ship fleet when she took command of the 3rd Fleet.

Earlier in her career, she served as a flight officer with Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron 4 and later as its commanding officer. She served as the Assistant Operations Officer aboard the training carrier USS Lexington. After the Navy allowed women to serve on combat ships in 1994, she served as navigator aboard the carrier USS Enterprise and as commanding officer of the amphibious assault ship USS Bataan.
