How many numbers are in your phone for your own house?

Most homeowners end up with three. One for the AC, one for the plumber, one for whoever they called that time the breaker kept tripping.

That's not how it has to work here.

The rooftop unit, the water heater in the closet, the panel on the wall. Same company, same trucks, same people who already know your house. When we're out for one thing, we can look at the rest while we're there.

It sounds like a small thing until the week you need two of them.

We have been back to houses we first worked on two owners ago.

That is what four decades in one town looks like. Temperature Control started here in 1982. Same city, same trade, and a lot of the same families.

Over the years the work grew. Heating and cooling first, then plumbing, then electrical. Not because it looked good on a truck, but because homeowners kept asking whether we could handle the other thing too.

What hasn't changed is how it works when someone shows up. You get a straight explanation, your options, and a recommendation we'd give our own family. If the repair is the right call, we'll say so.

Closing vents in unused rooms sounds like a clever money saving shortcut.

Unfortunately, your heating and cooling system was designed around a certain amount of airflow, and closing multiple vents can interfere with that balance. If you want better control over different areas of the house, ask us about options designed for that purpose.

Black wire to black wire is not always the right answer.

We asked Mike what usually goes wrong when a homeowner takes on wiring themselves. That was his answer.

The assumption is that matching colors is the whole job. A lot of the time it is. But builders didn't always wire things the same way, and what's behind the wall isn't always what you'd expect from the front of it. That's why the multimeter comes out first. You find out where the voltage actually is before you decide where to send it.

This isn't a reason to be nervous about your own house. It's just the difference between guessing and knowing.

Anyone who quotes your water heater over the phone is guessing.

Repair or replace is not a question anybody can answer without looking. But there are a few things that point pretty clearly in one direction.

Here is how we think about it.

If the unit is under ten years old and one component failed (a thermostat, an element, a valve) that's usually a repair, and usually a reasonable one.

If the tank itself is leaking, that's a replacement. There's no patching a tank. Once it goes, it goes.

Between those two, it depends. Age matters, but so does what's actually wrong, what the repair costs against a new unit, and how many times you've already fixed it. Tucson's hard water shortens the life of a water heater, so a ten-year-old tank here has had a harder run than a ten-year-old tank somewhere else.

What we'd tell you in your house is the same thing we'd tell you here. Sometimes the repair is the right call, and we'll say so.

Replacing a GFCI outlet and installing an EV charger are the same phone call here.

Mike runs the electrical division at Temperature Control, and the range is about as wide as it sounds. Circuits for your AC system, pump work, EV charger installs, panel work, and the ceiling fan you've been meaning to swap out for two years.

People tend to assume the small stuff isn't worth calling about. It usually is. A GFCI in a bathroom takes a fraction of the time, and it's exactly the kind of thing that gets put off until it matters.

No job too small, no job too big. Mostly we just try to take care of people here in town.
