Hexagon today announced the global launch of our next-generation Vehicle Intervention System (VIS), an advanced safety solution designed to help surface mining operations prevent collisions before they occur.

Built on Hexagon's Collision Avoidance System (CAS) 10.36 and integrated safety portfolio, VIS provides a final layer of protection when advisory controls alone are insufficient. The latest release of Hexagon CAS 10 further extends the capabilities of our proven collision avoidance platform. CAS 10.36 introduces RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) support for survey-grade positioning and enhanced safety zone logic, giving mining operations new capabilities to support safer vehicle interactions.

As an EMESRT (Earth Moving Equipment Safety Round Table) Level 9 vehicle intervention system, VIS can automatically take control of a machine in defined high-risk situations when safety thresholds are breached, helping to prevent incidents, protect personnel, and support operational continuity.

“When milliseconds matter, mines need technology that can act decisively," said Hexagon's Dave Goddard, President - Mining Division. "The next generation of VIS builds on years of operational experience and proven deployments to provide the highest level of intervention available, helping customers protect people, equipment, and productivity."

At Hexagon, we are dedicated to supporting future generations of mining professionals through educational opportunities, trainings, community involvement, and more.

Hexagon's Oliver Stokes, Senior Specialist - Resource Recovery, recently gave a presentation on blast movement, muckpile dynamics, and the Hexagon Blast Movement Monitoring (BMM) system through practical demonstrations, blast footage, and field-based examples to 250 WA School of Mines (WASM) students.

"Thanks for your great lecture," said Curtin University's Dr. Roohollah Shirani Faradonbeh. "I received very positive feedback from some students. One said it was the best lecture over the past few years."

A huge thanks to Oliver for representing Hexagon and for leading an engaging, insightful talk for a room full of our future innovators in mining!

In mine safety, the gap between awareness and intervention is where the real challenge lies.

In this month's edition of Shift, we're joined by Hexagon's Xiao Ru, Senior Product Manager, who reflects on his career-long focus on addressing the gap between awareness and action, and how his team's dedication to solving this problem led to the Hexagon Vehicle Intervention System (VIS) becoming the first open-pit vehicle intervention system to successfully receive independent validation by the University of Pretoria.

"Mining environments are dynamic," writes Ru. "Vehicles vary in size, speed, and behaviour. Terrain changes. Visibility shifts. No two operations are identical. Designing a system that can interpret all of this in real time, and respond appropriately, requires more than technology. It requires a deep understanding of how people work, how machines behave, and how trust is built over time."

A Exposibram 2026 chegou ao fim, mas deixa para a Hexagon a satisfação de ter vivido uma edição especial com o estande cheio durante todos os dias da feira.

Durante quatro dias nosso estande foi palco de encontros, trocas, conhecimento e muita tecnologia. Apresentamos, por meio de realidade aumentada, soluções que conectam diferentes etapas da cadeia da mineração, mostramos nossas tecnologias na prática, promovemos demonstrações e experiências interativas, além de uma programação de palestras com conteúdos que trouxeram discussões relevantes sobre os desafios e o futuro da mineração.

Também proporcionamos uma experiência de teleoperação ao vivo, conectando nosso estande, em Belo Horizonte, a um LHD operado remotamente a partir da NORCAT, no Canadá.

Para fechar cada dia de programação, tivemos a apresentação da Orquestra Jovens da Vila, levando cultura ao nosso estande e reforçando o compromisso da Hexagon com iniciativas que valorizam o desenvolvimento social e a transformação de pessoas.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Regional Mining Forum in Johannesburg, South Africa last week! ⚒️🌍

We were joined by colleagues, clients, and internal experts from across the region for an inspiring event that encouraged an open exchange of knowledge, experiences, and ideas about the latest innovation in the mining industry. Some of the attendees also had the opportunity to attend the Hexagon in-cab technology experience, where they experienced our safety technologies in a live operational environment.

A special thanks to Tenke Fungurume Mining's Kheops Kitoki, Deputy Manager - Mine Technical Services, who presented on long-term mine planning using Hexagon MinePlan, and to Mafube Coal's Kenny Mulivha, Section Engineer, for joining us for an insightful fireside chat about Mafube Coal’s journey in implementing Hexagon Operator Alertness System (OAS).

We're honoured to announce that two mining engineering students at the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) have earned top honours after using Hexagon MinePlan in their graduation research!

Jiangwei Liu received the university’s Outstanding Graduation Thesis Award for the dissertation “Resource Estimation and Mining Design of an Open-Pit Mine Based on MinePlan”, and Qin Hao, whose research focused on underground mining, received the School-Level Outstanding Graduation Thesis Award after completing the project using MinePlan.

“Through this learning experience, I not only became proficient in using MinePlan but also strengthened my professional knowledge and research skills,” said Liu. “From data preparation and geological modelling to resource estimation and mine design optimisation, the instructors provided guidance throughout the project and helped me overcome both technical and design challenges. I would like to sincerely thank the Hexagon team for their guidance and support, which directly contributed to my thesis being recognised.”
