Operation: Neptune. Day of Days!
https://www.army.mil/d-day/history.html

On June 5, 1944, Operation: Neptune Began. Neptune was the actual assault of the Normandy beaches for Operation: Overlord. The largest collection of aircraft were used to drop the largest airborne assault up to that point in history. The Airborne part of Operation: Neptune was in preparation for the naval part of the assault. 821 cargo aircraft dropped over 21,000 airborne assault troops of the US Army, British Army and Canadian Army.

They started late evening of June 5th. A stream of aircraft and towed gliders 300 miles long flew 500 to 1,000 feet above the ground and dropped their troopers all over Normandy, France in the early morning of June 6th.

The overall operation was a success but at the cost of many lives. It was the beginning of the end of N**i, Germany.

It’s hard to imagine the 2026 Wings Over Batavia Air Show becoming even more of an entertainment spectacle, but Kyle & Liz Franklin are helping us do that.

Kyle Franklin’s Flying Circus is a truly unique air show act that will have every fan in attendance pointing, smiling, and making sure everyone around them is paying attention.

Batavia fans can expect to see the following at this year’s show:

COMEDY ACT: A hilarious, jaw-dropping routine of outrageous maneuvers and controlled chaos that keeps crowds laughing and amazed. It’s a fan-favorite performance that you won’t want to miss.

DEADSTICK ACT: Kyle showcases the fundamentals of aerobatics with loops, rolls, hammerheads, and snap rolls - all in an aircraft never designed for it - while narrating every move from the cockpit. Then, in a jaw-dropping twist, he cuts the engine mid-air to prove the plane can still glide, skillfully managing its energy to land smoothly and taxi right up to Liz.

Join us for all this excitement and more, September 5 & 6 at Batavia Airport! https://wingsoverbatavia.com/tickets/

On this day in aviation history, 1974: The First US Army Female Aviator!

She didn't know she was the first. She wasn't trying to be the first. She just wanted to fly for the Army.

On June 4, 1974: Second Lieutenant Sally D. Woolfolk, United States Army, graduated from the Rotary Wing Flight School at the Army Aviation School, Fort Rucker, Alabama. She was the first woman to be designated a U.S. Army Aviator.

Colonel Sally Murphy retired from the United States Army, 1 July 1999, after 27 years of service.

😁

July 15th, 1994: A United States Marine Corps AV-8B V/STOL Harrier descended below altitude minimums over a built-up area, and in clear visual atmospheric conditions, pilot Harry Tasker (computer salesman) failed to maintain minimal separation from an obstacle, allowing the tail of his aircraft to come in contact with a construction crane in downtown Miami. Despite damage to its aft section, the aircraft was successfully recovered without further incident on the 7 Mile Bridge.

The crane’s presence was properly published in NOTAMS for the Miami downtown area at the time of the incident.
