Alabama Students for the Exploration and Development of Space

Alabama Students for the Exploration and Development of Space SEDS (Students for the Exploration and Development of Space) is an independent, student-based organization which promotes the exploration of space.

Meetings are typically:

THURSDAYS @ 5:00pm
SERC 2039

*Individual meeting information will be posted accordingly*

Our purpose is to serve as an umbrella organization for space-related project groups and as an outlet for any UA student interested in the exploration of space! We periodically have guest speakers who have experience working for the space industry. We discuss celestial phenomena, rec

ent discovers, and do engineering/space related activities. Our organization hosts several events such as Space Day and Yuri's Night. We also founded the Tuscaloosa Rocketry Challenge, a county-wide water rocketry competition for Tuscaloosa middle schoolers.

*This year, we are beginning an initiative to start the first UA CubeSat team within our organization.

*Outreach Opportunity*:
The Tuscaloosa Rocketry Challenege! This March we began a water-rocketry Program at HMS, and next year we will expand this competition to 3 additional Tuscaloosa middle schools. At Hillcrest Middle School, our volunteers taught three advanced 6th grade classes about the importance of space exploration, then designed, and built water rockets. This lecture series lead up to the rocket launching contest held on their football field. (Please contact us if you would like to be involved in any of our opportunities.) NASA has recently received an information about an asteroid that could possibly hit the Earth in 2135. Because of fear, the space organization decided to launch a probe that will help them learn more about the celestial object and the impact it can cause once it collide with Earth.

AL SEDS Outreach: Tuscaloosa Rocketry Challenge

Do you remember how you felt when you were 11-years-old, dreaming of becoming an astronaut? The Tuscaloosa Rocketry Challenge inspires our students and volunteers to maintain that mindset. We teach our students using science, engineering, problem-solving, creative expression, and competition which combines to create a one-of-a-kind educational experience.

From brilliantly colored, distant galaxies and burning stars to vast, empty darkness and the coldest temperatures possible, the many extremes of space lead to a single conclusion: space is cool. This conviction and very little else drove a handful of students to create a one-of-a-kind organization t…
