Why Is Your Power Bill Higher Than It Should Be?

If your power bill is going up but your thermostat hasn’t changed, your HVAC system could be the reason.

Common causes include:

• Dirty air filters restricting airflow
• Leaky ductwork losing conditioned air
• Low refrigerant making the system run longer
• An aging unit losing efficiency
• Lack of routine maintenance

Most of these issues are preventable with regular service.

Routine maintenance helps lower energy costs, extend the life of your system, and prevent unexpected breakdowns.

If it’s been more than 6–12 months since your last tune-up, it may be time to schedule one.

What is a SEER rating and why does it matter?
SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. In simple terms: the higher the SEER rating, the more energy-efficient your HVAC system is.

Lower SEER (12–14)
• Lower upfront cost
• Higher monthly power bills

Standard SEER (15)
• Standard in most installs
• Solid efficiency

Mid SEER (16-17)
• Better energy savings without a big price jump
• Improved comfort and system performance

High SEER (18–21+)
• Maximum energy savings
• Quieter operation
• Higher cost upfront, but lower long-term costs

Why it matters:
A higher SEER system uses less electricity to cool your home, which can mean lower power bills, better comfort, and less strain on your system, especially during Alabama summers. While SEER focuses on cooling efficiency, higher-SEER systems are often paired with more efficient heat pumps and advanced technology. That means better performance in colder temperatures, more consistent comfort, and lower energy use during winter months, helping reduce electric bills even when your system is heating your home.

Not sure what SEER rating is right for your home? We’re happy to help you choose what makes sense for your space and budget.

Quick reminder: change your air filter!

A dirty filter can:
• Restrict airflow
• Make your system work harder
• Increase power bills
• Reduce indoor air quality

Changing your filter regularly is one of the easiest ways to protect your HVAC system.

As always, call us if you need us! 256-577-9432

With this extremely cold weather coming in (or possibly coming in, they've changed the forecast so many times who knows what is actually going to happen) it’s a good time to make sure your HVAC system is ready.

A few simple things can go a long way:
- Change your air filter so your system isn’t working harder than it needs to
- Make sure vents aren’t blocked by furniture or rugs
- Try to keep your thermostat at a steady temperature instead of constantly adjusting it
- Check outdoor units for ice, snow, or debris and keep them as clear as possible
- Seal up drafts around doors and windows to help keep the warm air in

Don't forget.. there are no after-hours or weekend service charges through February 1, so now is a great time to get things checked before it turns into a bigger issue.

Stay warm & call Devin at 256-577-9432 if you need us!

If your heat is running nonstop, making strange noises, or just not keeping up.. don’t wait it out. Extreme cold puts extra strain on HVAC systems, and small problems can turn into no-heat situations fast.

To help our customers stay warm, Prestage Heating & Air is waiving ALL weekend & after-hours service charges through February 1st.
