π οΈ WHY CUSTOM FABRICATED PLATES MATTER: Every Hole, Stud, and Dimension Has a Purpose
When contractors see a line item for "custom bearing plate" or "trumpet plate" on a submittal, it can look like overhead that could be simplified. Here is why that line item exists.
What these components do:
Bearing plates distribute the tieback or anchor load from the bar and nut onto the face of the concrete, shotcrete, or soldier pile. Trumpet plates provide a tapered transition from the cased portion of the anchor to the unbonded length, protecting the bar from corrosion and allowing controlled movement.
Why the dimensions matter:
Plate size and thickness are calculated based on the anchor design load and the bearing capacity of the substrate. A plate that is too small concentrates load and risks local crushing. A plate that is too thin bends under stress and compromises load distribution.
Why the holes matter:
The center hole diameter must match the bar diameter and coupler clearance exactly. Undersized or misaligned holes cause field installation problems that require modifications on the face of the excavation. That is slow and expensive work that holds up the whole crew.
Why headed studs matter:
When plates are cast into concrete caps or pile heads, headed studs create the mechanical bond that transfers load. The number, size, and layout of studs are calculated by the structural engineer and cannot be changed in the field without a formal revision.
