Geocomp and GeoTesting Express' Ahmad Tourei recently presented at the 11th Forensic Engineering Congress alongside 's Masoud Mousavi, held October 22–25 in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, sharing insights into the investigation of corrosion in mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls.
The research, conducted for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, examined a wall along I-43 in Glendale, Wisconsin, to evaluate steel reinforcement deterioration, identify contributing factors, and assess long-term performance. Through field investigations, laboratory testing, and stability analyses, the team found that pavement distress and the intrusion of moisture and deicing salts contributed to significant corrosion of buried steel reinforcements.
The findings highlight the importance of understanding the conditions beneath the surface when evaluating infrastructure performance. Recommendations included improved drainage, better pavement maintenance, and corrosion mitigation measures to help extend the service life of MSE walls.
