WHY YOUR AC PICKS THE HOTTEST DAY TO QUIT 🥵

We’ve already had a few hot spells this year, and if your air conditioner made it through them, that’s great.

But here’s what we see every summer: systems that seemed perfectly fine right up until the day they weren’t.

Air conditioners rarely fail when temperatures are mild. They fail when they’re running continuously for hours at a time and every component is working at maximum capacity.

That’s when small problems become big ones.

A weak capacitor finally gives out.
A dirty condenser coil can’t reject heat efficiently.
Low refrigerant starts affecting cooling performance.
Loose electrical connections begin to overheat.

And unfortunately, those breakdowns tend to happen on the exact days when HVAC companies are at their busiest.

That’s why regular air conditioner maintenance is so important. A professional AC tune-up helps identify worn components, airflow restrictions, refrigerant issues, and electrical concerns before they turn into emergency repairs.

HVAC FAQ: Summer AC Maintenance

🥵 How often should I service my air conditioner?
Most air conditioners should be professionally serviced once per year. Heat pumps that provide both heating and cooling should ideally be serviced twice per year: once before cooling season and once before heating season.

🥵 What is included in an AC tune-up?
A quality HVAC tune-up should include inspection and cleaning of the condenser coil and evaporator coil, refrigerant level verification, capacitor testing, contactor inspection, electrical connection checks, thermostat testing, condensate drain inspection, airflow measurements, and overall system performance testing.

🥵 What is the most common AC failure during summer?
One of the most common failures is a bad capacitor. The capacitor helps start and run motors throughout the system. Extreme heat can accelerate wear and cause capacitors to fail, often resulting in an air conditioner that suddenly stops cooling.

🥵 Can an AC tune-up lower my electric bill?
Yes. Dirty coils, airflow restrictions, and refrigerant issues force an air conditioner to work harder and run longer. Proper maintenance helps the system cool more efficiently, which can reduce energy consumption and operating costs.

🥵 My air conditioner seems to be working fine. Do I still need maintenance?
Absolutely. Most major HVAC failures begin as small issues that don’t immediately affect comfort. Regular maintenance helps identify those issues while they are still inexpensive to address.

🥵 What are warning signs that my AC may need service?
Watch for:
• Warm air from supply vents
• Weak airflow
• Unusual noises
• Frequent cycling on and off
• Higher-than-normal energy bills
• Excess indoor humidity
• Water around the indoor unit

🥵 Do you service all of Northern Virginia?
Yes. Cardinal Plumbing Heating & Air provides HVAC maintenance, repair, and installation services throughout Sterling, Ashburn, Leesburg, Reston, Alexandria, and surrounding NoVA communities.

Today marks Justin’s 1-year Cardinal-versary, and we're so glad we've had a front row seat to his growth over the past year!

Justin joined Cardinal just one year ago as an apprentice, and since day one, he has consistently shown a strong work ethic, humility, and determination to learn the trade the right way. Over the past year, he has balanced hands-on field experience with his schooling through UTA, steadily developing into a knowledgeable and capable technician who is now confidently running service calls on his own.

What stands out most about Justin is how quickly he has earned the trust of both customers and teammates. Customers regularly describe him as detailed, knowledgeable, honest, and professional. They appreciate the time he takes to explain his findings clearly, answer questions thoroughly, and recommend solutions based on what is truly best for the homeowner... not simply the most expensive option.

Justin’s growth in just one year is a reflection of the hard work and hustle he brings every single day. From apprentice to independently serving customers in the field, he has embraced every opportunity to learn and improve. Cardinal is proud to have Justin on the team and excited to see what the future holds for him! ❤️

There’s a growing conversation happening right now about college, career paths, debt, AI, and what the future of work actually looks like.

But we continue to believe that more young people should be hearing about the skilled trades.

Careers in HVAC, plumbing, and electrical are in incredibly high demand, and that demand isn’t slowing down. Homes will always need heating, cooling, plumbing, power, repairs, maintenance, and skilled people who know how to solve problems in the real world.

While many industries are wondering how AI will reshape jobs, the trades continue to offer something incredibly valuable: hands-on work that still requires real people, real skill, and real human interaction.

At the same time, the cost of a traditional four-year college education continues to rise. In Virginia, the average cost can easily reach around $28,000 per year... with no guarantee of a job at the end.

The trades offer a path built around:
* Paid, hands-on training
* Earning while you learn
* Real-world technical skills
* Customer service and communication experience
* Career growth without massive student debt
* Long-term stability and strong earning potential

At Cardinal Plumbing Heating & Air, our apprenticeship program is designed to help people build a real career from the ground up. Apprentices spend 3–6 months in paid on-the-job training while also attending an intensive one-week HVAC training school.

But learning the trade is only part of it. We want our technicians to be able to build thriving careers, so we also focus on:
* Communication
* Customer service
* Problem-solving
* Teamwork
* Professionalism

One of the things we’re most proud of is the culture here: high energy, team-oriented, and full of people who genuinely want to help each other succeed. Nobody grows alone in this industry.

And yes, there’s real earning potential here too. Skilled trades careers can provide opportunities to earn six figures while building a stable, meaningful future.

This isn't a “backup plan.” It's an incredible career path for people who want to work hard, keep learning, solve real problems, and build something tangible every day.

Patrick, Chris, and Justin were recently on Great Day Washington discussing these opportunities and why the future of the trades is so bright.

The next generation of tradespeople is needed now more than ever, and we’re excited to help train them!

Today is National Skilled Trades Day, but we think the trades deserve a lot more attention than one day a year!

For decades, students were told that success only came through a four-year degree. Meanwhile, industries like plumbing, HVAC, and electrical kept the country running, often without the recognition they deserved.

The reality is skilled trades offer something a lot of people are searching for right now:

• Stable, meaningful work
• Opportunities to grow without massive student debt
• Hands-on problem solving
• Real careers with long-term potential
• Work that can’t be outsourced or replaced by AI
• The chance to build something tangible and serve your community

We see it every day in our apprenticeship program.

Apprentices come in unsure of themselves. Then slowly, through training, mentorship, repetition, and experience, confidence starts to grow. Skills grow. Careers grow. Lives change.

And the impact goes far beyond the individual technician.

Strong tradespeople help keep homes safe, families comfortable, water running, heat working, and businesses operating. These are essential careers that matter deeply to the communities they serve.

One of the things we care deeply about at Cardinal Plumbing Heating & Air is creating real pathways into the trades, especially for young people who may not realize these opportunities exist. That’s why partnerships with local schools, apprenticeship training, and hands-on mentorship matter so much to us.

The next generation of skilled tradespeople is already here. They’re smart, motivated, and eager to learn. They just need opportunity, support, and someone willing to invest in them.

We’re proud to be part of that process.

Happy National Skilled Trades Day to every technician, installer, apprentice, dispatcher, warehouse runner, and tradesperson out there keeping things moving every single day!
