From many moons ago, this Pemberton Teahouse is a favorite garden structure project of mine. The clients wanted a retreat from mosquitoes where they could enjoy their garden and its views. Seeing the art in their home, I learned that they had traveled often to Japan, so I asked if a tea house idea--translated to Texas--might be appealing. They took to the idea, and so the Texas Teahouse was born. It's not a tea house in a strict sense, but I was inspired by post and beam Japanese structures and their sensibilities. My sweet youngest daughter was my model here--she's grown now, but I've always loved these shots from when she was younger. Look for this project in the book Stylish Sheds by . Beautifully built by David Wilkes Builders.

This Blue Kitchen is a favorite of mine. The client asked for stainless steel counters, which are balanced by the warm cabinets and trim color--and the fabulous blue tile. The major elements--the sink, range and refrigerator--stayed in place. We kept most of the cabinets, but added new ones at strategic places to increase the storage capacity of the kitchen (e.g. we added cabinets up to the patio door which also increased the footprint of the kitchen). The beautiful tile is in a "picket" shape and sold by Fireclay Tile. Another thing the client asked for was the marble windowsills, which have a simple elegance that I love. I included a shelf above the kitchen window to display beloved curios. There's a new cabinet that we added on the other side of the patio door which lends storage and serving capacity to the adjacent dining room. The cabinet is capped by a black walnut slab that we selected in person. The slab fabricator made a client live edge cutting board as a gift (that you can see in the first three photos). This was a fun collaboration with a delightful artistic client with impeccable taste and a flair for color. Built by Powell Construction Company. Photography by Matt Varney photography.

Here is a backyard pavilion I designed a couple of years ago. The front portion is a covered patio facing the yard and the house, while the backside is a storage shed. Stained cantilevered beams and wood lattice soften the light at the edges of the porch. The shingles are fiber-cement Hardi-shingles and the floor finish is Oklahoma flagstones. Cozy spot to enjoy a cold beverage and bask in the outdoor air, below a ceiling fan! Beautifully built by CG&S Design-Build. Photo by Ryan Thayer Davis.

More progress photos for the new home in Brykerwoods. Roofing looks amazing. Brick is nearly complete, siding and trim will soon be painted. Pool is roughed in. Screening soon to come at the back porch. Grading and landscaping to arrive soon. Interiors were in progress, but nothing photographable yet. Check out the cool chimney shrouds! Built by CG&S.

Progress photos on the new home in Austin’s Brykerwoods neighborhood. The design slips the structure under a set of protected heritage live oak trees. I am happy to see that it fits so well into such a tight envelope. Austin Common” brick and composite cedar share roofing will come next on the exterior. two fireplaces are being installed. The interior is being wired and insulated, to be followed by months of finish work.

Here’s a whole house remodel/addition project I designed in 2022, built by another contractor. We did a full interior remodel along with substantial second level additions that can’t be seen from the street. The curbside transformation is as dramatic a change as the beautiful interiors. I love the new front portico, dormers, windows, functioning shutters, brick steps--and the absence of the former double height mansard roofed entry.
