UTEP Associate Professor Ahmed El-Gendy, Ph.D., is researching a new way to use heat in the fight against cancer with the help of magnetic nanoparticles made from manganese ferrite.
Scientists have known for years that heat can help destroy cancer cells, but delivering it safely and precisely has been a challenge. Dr. El-Gendy's research focuses on tiny magnetic nanoparticles that can be placed near a tumor and heated using a magnetic field, helping target cancer cells while reducing damage to healthy tissue.
While the research is still in its early stages, the results are promising, and the team will continue studying the safety and effectiveness of this approach.

We would like to welcome Dr. Marc Knecht as the new Dean of the College of Science at UTEP.

Dr. Knecht earned his Ph.D. in Materials Chemistry from Vanderbilt University and has held major leadership roles at the University of Miami.

His research in bio-inspired nanotechnology and materials chemistry has earned national recognition, with more than 120 published research papers and significant support from leading research institutions.

We’re thrilled to have Dr. Knecht join our community and look forward to the future of science at UTEP.

Researchers from Dr. Koculi’s lab talk about what the Zika virus is, why it’s still important to study, and what it means for the future of places like El Paso and the border region. In their recent paper, they developed a lab test (assay) that helps us quickly find molecules that could affect the Zika virus. This kind of tool makes it easier to screen potential treatments and better understand how the virus works.
