The EIA expects average electric heating bills to rise about 4% this winter, and over 40% of U.S. homes heat with electricity.

You can’t do much about the rate. What you can control is how hard your system works to keep you warm. A heat pump that’s sized right for your home runs longer, steadier cycles. One that’s oversized short-cycles all winter and wastes energy doing it.

Not sure your system was sized right? Start with a load calc!

The load calc is one of the smallest costs on any HVAC project. It’s also the one that decides everything after it: the equipment size, the duct design, and whether your plans get through review.

That’s why going cheap here rarely stays cheap. A calc built on guessed inputs or missing details doesn’t show its problems on day one. They come up later, at permit review, at install, or the first time the system runs through a hot afternoon.

Paying a little more up front for a calc done right costs less than fixing one that wasn’t.

👉 Whether you’re replacing a system, building new, or submitting plans, start with a load calc you can trust.

Getting two different HVAC recommendations for the same house is more common than you’d think.

It usually happens because one contractor sized the system off square footage or the old unit, and the other ran the numbers. Square footage doesn’t account for your windows, insulation, which way the house faces, or how many people live there. A Manual J load calc does.

So when the quotes don’t match, don’t just compare prices. Ask each contractor:
✔️ How did you size this system?
✔️ Can I see the load calc?

With HVAC prices still going up, guessing is getting expensive.

👉 Before you choose a system, ask for the load calc behind it.

On a tenant build-out, the best time to bring in your HVAC designer is earlier than most people think.

If the layout is still taking shape, HVAC can be planned alongside it: where equipment goes, how ducts run, and how much space the system needs. Wait until the plans are final, and fitting the system in can mean changes you didn’t plan for.

Working on a tenant improvement? Talk to us while the layout is still on the table.

The drawings are done. The permit isn’t. 🏢

If you’ve ever had a commercial job sit in plan review longer than the build itself, this one’s for you. Watch to the end to see what reviewers actually look for.

Have a commercial project that needs HVAC design? Send us your plans and we’ll put together an estimate. procalcs.net
