While a single tree is remarkable, a forest is something else entirely. It is one of the most complex, interconnected, and carbon-storing systems on Earth. And this week’s Mango Monday has a connection to what we do at Mango Materials that we think is worth sharing.

Here’s what makes forests extraordinary:

🌲 Forests are home to 80% of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity. They are not just trees but ecosystems that support more life than almost any other environment on Earth.

💧 Forests capture rainfall, filter it through root systems, and release it slowly into rivers and groundwater. One third of the world’s largest cities rely on forests for their fresh water supply.

🌍 Forests absorb around 2.6 billion tons of CO2 per year and store carbon in trunks, branches, roots, and soil. They are one of Earth’s most powerful natural carbon capture systems.

🦠 And here’s where it connects to us.

Trees store carbon in wood. Mango Materials’ bacteria store carbon in PHA. Different organism. Same principle. Both part of the natural carbon cycle. Both inspired by biology.

Trees are doing a lot more than just standing there. 🌳

This week’s Mango Monday includes five remarkable tree facts including one that puts YOPP® PHA material right at the roots of something we’re genuinely excited about.

🌳 Trees communicate underground through an underground fungal network called the mycorrhizal network. Trees share nutrients, water, and chemical distress signals with neighboring trees. Scientists call it the Wood Wide Web.

🧘 Trees calm you down by releasing phytoncides, airborne chemicals that reduce stress and anxiety in humans. Time in a forest isn’t just pleasant. It is physiologically beneficial.

🌍 One tree absorbs 48 pounds of CO2 per year. Multiply that by the world’s three trillion trees and the math becomes extraordinary.

🏙️ Urban trees cool cities by up to 9°F. Tree canopies shade surfaces, release water v***r, and reduce the urban heat island effect.Trees are living infrastructure.

Using wastes as resources and producing tangible products that are eco-friendly and non-toxic are core to our mission. What an amazing weekend at Bay Area Maker Faire!

This past weekend we unveiled our YOPP HT-102 3D printer filament and spent 3 days having exciting conversations with curious individuals of all ages.

Here are some highlights:

We saved the best for last. 🥭

This week’s Mango Monday is one of our most personal editions yet and includes the origin story that explains everything about why our company exists and how it got its name.

Here’s what makes this week’s lineup so remarkable:

🍊 Oranges aren’t named for the color, it was the other way around.

🍋 Lemon trees can produce fruit all year long, and a lot of it!

🍉 Watermelon is classified as both a fruit AND a vegetable.

🍎 Apples come in a lot of varieties, and shades of red, green, and yellow.

🥭 And then there’s the mango.

Our favorite fruit. The inspiration behind our name. A company built on naturally occurring biology deserved a name that felt as natural as the science and the mango, produced entirely by nature without a single synthetic ingredient, felt exactly right.

PHA is produced by bacteria. The mango is produced by nature.
Both are pretty remarkable. Both are made by biology.

The leaves aren’t dying. 🍂

They’re doing something far more interesting.

This week’s Mango Monday is five autumn facts for anyone who has ever stood outside in October and wondered what’s actually making all of this happen.

Here are a few things that makes fall so remarkable:

🍂 The colors were there all summer, but it is chlorophyll’s intense green that masks the yellows and oranges hiding in every leaf. When shorter days trigger chlorophyll to break down, those colors finally get their moment. Autumn doesn’t add color. It reveals it.

🌡️ It’s not the cold, it’s the light. Falling temperatures slow the process but shortening daylight hours are what trigger it. Trees sense the changing photoperiod and begin preparing for winter weeks before the first frost arrives.

🌱 Every falling leaf is carbon returning home. Decomposing leaves feed soil microorganisms, return carbon to the cycle, and build the healthy soil we explored in an earlier Mango Monday. Autumn is the carbon cycle made visible.

Which is exactly what PHA is designed to be part of.
