The wall behind his gear told him everything.
Firefighter Curtis Dunn rode backside out of a small single station in Arlington (TX).

Bunker gear hung on the wall next to the engine, on the exhaust side. After a while he pulled his coat down and the wall behind it was a different color.

Can you be an aggressive firefighter and still stay safe?
Steve Weissman from Firefighter Cancer Support Network says nobody is telling you to fight it from the yard.

His thinking? Go in. Put the fire out. Put it out fast. The quicker that fire goes out, the less time you spend standing in the carcinogens.

Inhalation and absorption are what get firefighters, he says. Clean your turnout gear. More importantly, clean your skin.

Flammable liquids fire? Pressure-fed fire? The chair of the FDIC Industrial Summit shares his tips.

Rick Haase (industrial expert and municipal volunteer chief) encapsulates the flame source so it cannot move on him.

His advice:

1) Get the ground monitor in close with a tight power cone stream and the fire stops spreading. Once he captures that flame, he can let it burn inside the capture for an extended period.

2) The 10° angle of the BlitzFire is what makes getting that close possible.

Low staffing changes everything.

How would you tackle this situation? Fireworks started a car fire, feet from the house.

Washington Township (IN) firefighter Hagen Brown and his crew rolled up to a car already throwing fire exposure to the structure. It started with fireworks catching two trash bins, then spread to a car parked tight against the house.

Equipment Choices
1) They pulled a 1-3/4" line off the driver's side and knocked the car down fast on tank water. They ran a Mid-Force combination nozzle on the engine bay.

2) Once it was struck, they hit it with foam from the ProPak to kill the smoldering and stop any rekindle. Inside the garage had hoarder conditions. If that had caught, it would have been a long night.

Do you agree? Jeremy Donch from National Fire Radio says there is a training crisis in the fire service.

➡️ Why is TFT posting a video about training and leadership? It's our mission to provide firefighters with the equipment, support and training resources to get the job done. And oftentimes that starts with conversations.

Donch tells a story about a probationary firefighter who was never taught how to pull ceilings. On his first real job, a piece of plaster and lath slid down his hook and hit him in the face, almost breaking his nose. Jeremy's point: overhaul is a massive part of the job, and if fire academies aren't teaching it at a basic level, they are failing the next generation.

"Checkbox nonsense" is what he says is killing the fire service, and killing firefighters.
