Firefighting tactics are changing, and Episode 12 with PJ Norwood brings the debate.

Basement fires. Search tactics. Water mapping. Smooth bore vs fog nozzle. Deck g*ns, blitz lines, and low staffing.

Hosted by Gordon Voit at the Connecticut Fire Academy during Winter Fire School, PJ also talks about the second edition of The Evolving Fireground with Sean Gray.

PJ breaks down what research is showing, what still gets argued at the kitchen table, and where the fireground is heading next.

Old way vs new way. Which wins?
Firefighter tactics are changing, and PJ Norwood is calling out the debate in Episode 12 of the TFT Fully Involved Podcast.

Old way said get down the basement stairs, then flow water.
New way says read the flow path, hold ventilation, and get water in first.

Basement fire a**ack, search tactics, water mapping, smooth bore vs fog nozzle, and deck g*ns are all on the table.

When the engine can’t get close, the water still has to.

In Ep. 13 of Fully Involved, Louisville firefighters break down the courtyard lay, a practical “horizontal high-rise” tactic for fires in long courtyards, offset alleys, setback homes, and tight access neighborhoods.

This one covers the stuff that can make or break the stretch:

âś… Where to drop the gated wye
âś… How to avoid bunching hose at the door
âś… When a crosslay is the better move
âś… Coordinating attack, ventilation, exposure protection, search, and overhaul
✅ Why the long lay is not just a stretch, it’s a system

Watch Ep. 13 and take it back to the kitchen table for your next company drill.

What do you do when the engine can’t get close?

🚨 Episode 13 now live: Courtyard Lay in Louisville | Fully Involved 🚨

The courtyard is longer than it looked.
The alley is tight.
The building is set back.
And now the first stretch has to be right.

Episode 13 of Fully Involved is all about the courtyard lay: how Louisville crews get big water closer, deploy the wye, build attack lines, protect exposures, coordinate ventilation, search, and finish the job.

The new foam is frustrating enough.

The last thing a firefighter wants is another attachment to find on scene.

The QuadraCup has an aspirating sleeve built right into the nozzle.

Fewer pieces to track.
Less setup talk at the line.
Just one nozzle that keeps things simpler.
And bubble integrity with the new foam is everything.

Extend the sleeve for shorter reach and more foam expansion.
Retract it for longer reach and less expansion.
Both settings can produce foam.

Can your tank transfer hit 600 GPM?

A rural water supply question for firefighters to ponder.

First tank feeds the fireground.
Second tank drops beside it.
Now the job is keeping water moving without interrupting delivery.

Henry Lovett shows how a jet siphon strainer uses pressurized water to create a venturi effect and transfer water from tank to tank.

That can mean a 500–600 GPM transfer rate.

Where does the water really go?

Any firefighter who works around hydrants should see this.

Ben Lehman shows how the Oasis Hydrant Assist Valve moves water from straight hydrant pressure to boosted relay pressure - which in this case resulted in 2,000 GPM and 35 psi residual off just one hydrant for Houtzdale-Ramey Fire Company.

When the relay pumper beats the hydrant, the clapper flips.
If relay pressure drops, it goes right back to hydrant water.

Do you need a dump site pumper?

A rural water supply question for firefighters to ponder. Henry Lovett from Water Supply Innovations dives in.

Someone has to own the ponds.

The dump site pumper drafts from the portable tank and supplies the fireground.

Sometimes that is the fire pumper. But when rigs and staffing allow, a second pumper dedicated to water supply can keep the setup cleaner.

First tank hits the ground.
Suction hose comes off.
Low-level strainers get set.
Now the shuttle has something solid to feed.

500 GPM became 2,000 GPM

Firefighter rural water supply: A real story of how Houtzdale-Ramey Fire Company (PA) made it happen off one hydrant.

This clip shows how the Oasis valve changed the flow and helped hold 30 to 35 psi residual.
