Several days ago, the CPSC announced a voluntary recall of gas dryers. About 21,000 units are involved.

The hazard in these dryers is the gas valve, which can fail to shut off properly. This can lead to the dryer and its contents heating after the drying cycle is complete, posing a risk of burn, fire and smoke inhalation. The CPSC reports more than 50 incidents of burnt or scorched clothing and several incidents of minor burns to hands or arms from the affected dryers. "This is a picture of my truck engine, the brown thing is a pretzel. Had my tuck worked on at a local dealer and they gave me a free pretzel, at least I think it was free. At least I don't have to starve if the truck braks down.

Julia C. in Arkansas writes: We have a gas clothes dryer and discovered that any small item in a load (bandana, washcloth, hot pad, laies undergarments, etc) ccan be sucked up against the exhaust outlet and stick there. The drum vanes are not far enough in back to knock it off. The dryer gets hotter and hotter. The burner makes a roaring sound, and one begins to smell scorch. This can be very dangerous. Perhaps all dryer fires are not from lint. We clean our lint trap after every load. I no longer dry small items in the dryer, and I am never far from it when it is running:
Heloise replies: Good warning! You are right about cleaning the lint trap after every use. Don't run the dryer when you are not there. Don't start the washer or dryer and then leave to run a quick eerrand. When you have multiple small items, put them in a lingerie bag before placing in the dryer. This will prevent them from getting caught on anything in the dryer. Better safe than sorry!

Customer had a bad griggling noise from the bathroom lavatory(sink) when he drained the tub. He wanted me to clean the main vent thinking that that was the problem. The real problem was when he had his lav. drain replaced due to leaks in the old pipe the person who did the work didn't install a vent for the sink as shown in the first picture. Air was being sucked in through the trap causing slow drain, noise, and sewer smell. The next 2 pictures show the correct way it should have been plumbed. The Air Valve allows air in, keeps smell out, now no more griggling sound, tub drains better and the owner didn't waste his money on cleaning the main vent unnescessarily.

Here are some tips to care for a septic system:
Conserve water. Take shorter showers, turn off the water while brushing teeth, and only run the dishwasher and washing machine when full. Using water efficiently will help to not overload your system.
Try to use the barbage disposal as little as possible. If you use the disposal often, sludge can accumulate more quickly, and your tank will need to be pumped more and pumped out every few years.
Do not put feminine hygiene products, diapers, cigarette butts, cat litter, coffee grounds, dental floss or tissues in the system. They do not break down.
NEVER put paint, pesticides or harmful chemicals down your system. They eliminate the bacteria needed to break down solids in the tank.

Following these simple hints will help you avoid expensive repairs to your system.
