🍂🔥 Turned Your Furnace On and Thought… “WHAT is that smell?!”
If you're firing up the heat for the first time this season, you might notice a smell you haven't smelled since last winter.
The good news? Some furnace smells can be completely normal. Others definitely shouldn't be ignored.
👃 Dusty or slightly burning smell: Dust can collect on your heating system while it sits unused during the summer. A mild dusty smell during the first startup may disappear fairly quickly.
⚠️ Electrical or burning plastic smell: Shut the system down and have it checked.
🚨 Strong gas or rotten egg smell: Don't ignore it. Leave the area and contact your gas utility/emergency services from a safe location.
🌫️ Persistent musty smell: Moisture, your filter, ductwork, or another HVAC issue may need attention.
The biggest thing to remember? A smell that doesn't go away, gets stronger, or just doesn't seem right deserves attention.
This is also a great time to schedule furnace maintenance BEFORE your heating system starts working overtime during a Mid-Michigan winter.
We put together a full guide explaining common furnace smells, what's normal, and when it's time to call.
