New Scale Robotics

New Scale Robotics Q-Span® Workstations automate measurement inspection of small parts. Ditch the calipers! Boost quality & productivity. A Division of New Scale Technologies, Inc.

New Scale Robotics makes do-it-yourself (DIY) automation tools for small part inspection. Our Q-Span® Workstation Kits combine robotic part handling, measurements using digital calipers and other instruments, and automated data logging. They improve efficiency, capacity, and real-time reporting of quality departments. Based on flexible and teachable collaborative robots, Q-Span Kits are agile solu

tions that fit into existing workflows. They help quality teams reduce errors, increase throughput, and better utilize skilled labor in small-batch, high-mix manufacturing. Easy to deploy without specialized training, they deliver return on investment (ROI) in less than ten months. We have nearly 20 years of experience delivering small, precise and smart embedded motion systems. Our miniature mechatronic modules fit in the smallest instruments – even mobile phones! They incorporate numerous patents and proprietary know-how, including piezoelectric and magnetic micro-actuators, sensors, drives, control systems and network connectivity. Our smart motion modules have unmatched miniaturization, micrometer-scale resolution, and fully-integrated microelectronics with intelligent firmware. We enable our customers to achieve higher performance with smaller size and faster development time. New Scale Technologies is committed to fully understand, meet and exceed our customers’ requirements through continuous improvement processes. Our manufacturing processes follow ISO guidelines and we have passed quality audits by major medical device manufacturers. We manufacture motion modules for the medical, scientific instruments, aerospace and defense, industrial, and consumer electronics markets in our facility near Rochester, New York.

See how Orchid Orthopedic Solutions uses the Q-Span Robotic Gauging System to automate QC inspection of its machined surgical drills.

Joseph Farinella, Quality Director at Orchid, explains the business benefits of the Q-Span System and cobots from Universal Robots. These include:
-Realizing immediate savings of more than 50 hours per week of inspection time
-Achieving total repeatability and reproducibility (GR&R) of less than 10%
-Deployment in less than a month
-Ability to reassign personnel to higher-value tasks

A recent article in Quality Magazine is a great summary of some modern trends in gaging. We are working to combine these digitized with collaborative – helping manufacturers automate gaging with robotic tools that are as easy to use as a smartphone.

"All types of gaging, whether it be hand tools, comparative gages, complex measuring stations or portable surface finish gages, have long gone digital. Many of today’s digital gages can perform complex measuring tasks and share information faster and easier than systems produced 10 years ago.

In many facilities, the quality control technician monitoring part quality in an inspection room, in a far corner of the plant, long after the product was produced is so 20th century. The norm today is monitoring part quality at the point of manufacture. This allows operators to inspect the part for quality and, using process control techniques, prevent bad parts from being produced." -George Schuetz (Mahr)
