🍂 Let the Cozy Season Begin!
Today marks the autumnal equinox and the official start of fall.

As the days grow shorter and the season begins to change, we’re looking forward to everything autumn brings here in Western New York: cooler mornings, colorful leaves, apple picking, c***r, donuts, pumpkin patches, bonfires, cozy sweaters, football, and of course, everything pumpkin spice. 🎃🍎☕🍁

From all of us at Vertex Optics, happy first day of fall! 🍁

💙 Team Sydor | Wilmot Warrior Weekend
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who came together in support of Wilmot Warrior Weekend.

We’re especially proud of our Sydor Optics, Inc. and Vertex Optics team members who rode, walked, donated, and helped raise awareness, along with the many friends, families, supporters, and others who contributed to the effort.

Every mile traveled and every donation made helps support cancer research and the patients and families whose lives are impacted by cancer.

To everyone who participated, donated, encouraged, or supported the cause in any way, thank you for showing up, giving back, and making a difference.

🔥 Optics Vocabulary | Annealing
Great optics do not start on the polishing machine. They start with the material itself.

Before an optical component is generated, ground, or polished, the substrate often undergoes a carefully controlled annealing process. During annealing, the material is heated and cooled at specific rates to relieve internal stresses introduced during glass manufacturing.

Why does that matter?
Residual stress can lead to distortion, dimensional instability, and unpredictable material behavior during manufacturing and throughout the component's service life.

By reducing these internal stresses, annealing helps provide:
🔹 Improved dimensional stability
🔹 Reduced risk of warping or cracking
🔹 More predictable manufacturing results
🔹 Enhanced optical performance
🔹 Greater long-term reliability

In precision optics, every process builds on the one before it. A properly annealed substrate provides the stable foundation needed to achieve demanding tolerances and consistent optical performance. Because precision starts long before the first surface is polished.

🎀 More than a ribbon cutting. A new chapter for Rochester’s skilled workforce.
We’re proud to celebrate the ribbon cutting for the new Sydor Optics Advanced Technology Center at Monroe Community College.

This state-of-the-art facility is the result of a strong collaboration between New York State, Monroe County, Monroe Community College, Sydor Optics, Inc., and industry partners, all working together to strengthen education, workforce development, and advanced manufacturing in our region.

More than twice the size of MCC’s current Advanced Technology Center, the new facility will provide immersive, hands-on learning environments for advanced manufacturing, automotive technology, HVAC, and more.

Especially meaningful to our industry, it will also become the new home of MCC’s Optical Systems Technology program, the first two-year optics program of its kind in the nation and an important pipeline for the optics and photonics workforce.

The Sydor Optics Advanced Technology Center represents a commitment to education, opportunity, and the people who will help shape the future of advanced manufacturing in Rochester and beyond.

We’re excited to celebrate this milestone and even more excited about the opportunities it will create for students, employers, and our entire community.

⚛️ Optics Dad Joke #10:
What’s a nuclear physicist’s favorite meal?

Fission chips. 🐟🍟

A little science, a little wordplay, and hopefully enough energy to spark a giggle.

🌀 Asphere Manufacturing | Precision Beyond the Sphere

Aspheric optics feature a surface profile that departs from a conventional sphere, allowing optical designers to better control aberrations, improve system performance, and, in many applications, reduce the number of optical elements required.

Manufacturing these complex surfaces requires more than advanced equipment. It demands carefully controlled processes, precise metrology, and experienced technicians who understand how every manufacturing stage influences the finished optic.

At Vertex Optics, our asphere manufacturing capabilities include:
• CNC generating and precision polishing
• Deterministic surface correction
• Noncontact profilometry and interferometric testing where appropriate
• Iterative measurement, correction, and verification
• Complete documentation and traceability

From prototype development through production, we manufacture custom aspheres for demanding aerospace, defense, medical, semiconductor, imaging, and research applications.

Complex surfaces. Controlled processes. Performance built into every curve.

🍦 A Sweet Visit at Vertex Optics!
Our team at Vertex Optics recently enjoyed a visit from the Netsins Ice Cream Truck, courtesy of Sage Rutty & Co., Inc.

It was a thoughtful gesture that added a little fun to the workday and gave our team a well-deserved treat.

A big thank you to Sage Rutty for the generosity, to Sydor Optics, Inc. for helping make it possible, and to the folks at Netsins Ice Cream for serving up the treats and allowing us to enjoy one of the simple pleasures of summer. ☀️🍨

We truly appreciate everyone who helped make the day a little sweeter!
