Pipe shoes are structural pipe supports that elevate a pipe above the supporting steel or concrete while transferring load through a wider, more controlled base. In most industrial piping systems, a pipe shoe is used when the line needs added standoff, better load distribution, insulation clearance, guided movement, or a defined attachment point for restraint and support details. The basic shoe typically consists of a pipe-attached upper section and a lower load-carrying member, often formed from plate or structural steel, that bears on the support surface. Pipe shoes are widely used because they help manage load, thermal movement, and support geometry more effectively than a bare pipe resting directly on steel.
Pipe shoes can be either welded or non-welded, depending on the service and installation constraints. Welded pipe shoes are attached directly to the pipe and are often chosen when a permanent, rigid connection is acceptable and hot work is not a problem. Non-welded pipe shoes use clamps, bolted collars, or other mechanical attachment methods and are often preferred where welding to the pipe is undesirable, restricted, or impractical in brownfield service. Cold shoes are a specialized type of pipe shoe used on cryogenic or low-temperature lines; they are designed not only to support the pipe but also to maintain insulation integrity and limit heat transfer into the line, helping prevent energy loss, condensation, icing, and local thermal problems at the support point.
