NEW: Cosmic “Hamburger” Has the Secret Ingredients (For Giant Planet Formation, That Is)

🍔 Hold the pickles! Just gas and dust for us, thanks.

Astronomers using ALMA Observatory to study “Gomez’s Hamburger” system—aka GoHam—discover the very earliest phases of giant planet formation between the dense layers of gas and dust.

GoHam, with its nearly edge‑on oriented disk, offers a rare view of its vertical structure – something that’s much harder to see in other disks.

And thanks to ALMA observations at millimeter wavelengths, scientists can clearly map the location of the millimeter-sized dust grains and several different gas-phase molecules within the layers, including two forms of carbon monoxide and the sulfur-bearing molecules CS and SO.

Congratulations to Nurdle Patrol!

The educational audio course is a finalist in The Anthem Awards 2026 for its creative approaches to education and social impact.

Developed in partnership with Tumble Science Podcast for Kids and supported by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, Nurdle Patrol combines an engaging secret-agent storyline with real-world investigations to help students explore plastics pollution, environmental stewardship and citizen science. The program is available in both English and Spanish.

Tim Spuck, AUI’s director of education and public engagement, co-led the Professional-Amateur Astronomer Workshop, an initiative between the International Astronomical Union and the Oil Region Astronomical Society. Attendees connected with fellow astronomy enthusiasts, took part in talks and workshops, and presented their research through poster sessions.

One internet search can be a successful science outreach moment.

For astronomer and artist Tyler Nordgren, the goal of his artwork isn’t simply to make people look — it’s to make them curious. A spark of curiosity can help connect people to the science happening at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO)'s facilities like the Very Large Array and Green Bank Observatory.

Communicating science isn’t just about sharing what we’ve learned. It’s about inviting people to wonder, ask questions and discover why the work matters.

UPDATE: The NSF Very Large Array Open House planned for Saturday, October 10, 2026, is canceled due to road damage from recent flooding and the subsequent closure of St. Rt. 60. The New Mexico Department of Transportation has issued travel guidance for detours to St. Rt. 60.

The VLA Visitor Center remains open during regular hours, and free public tours are still available on Saturdays and Sundays for those coming to the NSF VLA from the West and alternate routes.

While the NSF VLA cannot be accessed by State Route 60 coming from the East, New Mexico Roads and the Socorro County Office of Emergency Management have issued travel guidance for alternate routes. Drivers are advised to use caution as roads may be difficult to drive and 4WD vehicles are recommended.
