On August 10, 1897, Dr Felix Hoffmann synthesized chemically pure acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), creating the stable, digestible pain reliever we know today as Aspirin!
But synthesis is only half the battle; the magic happened during purification by recrystallization.
By isolating the crude ASA using thermal recrystallization and pulling it dry under vacuum in a Büchner funnel & filter flask assembly, he yielded pure, digestible crystals without stomach-irritating impurities.
Today, high-precision borosilicate filtration flasks and funnels remain foundational tools for compound isolation, QA/QC, and API refinement across labs.
