High electric bills for heating with a heatpump? Heatpumps have that backup auxiliary heat which can help maintain comfort on a system that has a freon leak and freon issues usually don't show themselves until the ac season. If your bills have been climbing over the winter you could have a issue. A clue would be if you notice the aux heat is on and your thermostat is maintaining temperature. Aux heat shouldn't be running unless it's very cold like 30s or under or if you have the temperature 3 or more degrees above the indoor temperature.

Sometimes you can do something right and it can still go wrong. Customer replaced the thermostat and wired it up correctly. But 10 years ago the installer didn't use the color code. They turned the power back on and boom no heat.
