Meet Danny Speight, President of Speight Marshall Francis (SMF).

If you’ve had the pleasure of meeting Danny, you know he’s not someone you easily forget. For more than four decades, Danny has been a dedicated leader in the AEC industry and has played an integral role in SMF since its founding. From day one, Danny has emphasized the importance of building strong relationships, keeping your word, and always following through on your promises—values that continue to shape SMF today.

With more than 40 years of experience across a diverse range of projects, Danny wears many hats around the office. Whether he’s mentoring the next generation of engineers, providing critical QA/QC, managing projects, designing solutions, overseeing construction administration, or performing inspections, he brings the same commitment and creativity to every challenge. Known for thinking outside the box, Danny has a knack for developing practical, innovative solutions to even the most complex projects.

We’re excited to see the future of advanced manufacturing taking shape right here in Hampton Roads!

With groundbreaking anticipated by the end of the year, the new $689 million LS Advanced Materials Manufacturing Complex will soon call Chesapeake’s Greenbrier area home. The 86-acre development will bring together magnet wire, rare-earth magnet, copper recycling, and rod manufacturing under one roof.

We’re proud and grateful to be part of this transformative project and to contribute to an investment that will have a lasting impact on Chesapeake, Hampton Roads, and beyond.

The final touches are going up at Sampson Paint redevelopment project for a new mixed-use community in the Manchester district of Richmond. This includes a mural seen here with one of our Special Inspectors, Je'Von Johnson!

His role includes performing on-site verification that certain critical construction activities are being performed according to the structural drawings, specifications, building code, and approved plans. This crucial boots on the ground job has it perks, like checking out unique happenings on site like this mural getting painted!

In August 2011, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake shook Virginia and Washington, D.C., causing significant damage to the Washington National Cathedral, particularly its intricate exterior stonework. With thousands of individually carved limestone pieces, restoring this historic landmark is a complex, time-intensive, and costly process.

Recently, SMF Principal Danny Rudd and his family visited the Cathedral and took part in its unique fundraising effort to support the ongoing restoration. The campaign includes building a 1:40-scale replica of the National Cathedral entirely out of LEGO bricks. By “purchasing” LEGO bricks, Danny and his family contributed to the model while helping fund the Cathedral’s restoration, one section at a time.

The project is a great reminder that the effects of a seismic event can extend well beyond the initial moments of an earthquake and highlights the importance of timely inspections and a strong emergency response.

SMF has firsthand experience with the importance of being ready to respond when disaster strikes. Following that same earthquake felt across Virginia in 2011, the City of Virginia Beach identified potential damage at Virginia Beach City Public Schools. In just four days leading up to Labor Day, the SMF team inspected 53 VBCPS schools to ensure they were safe and ready for students to return.

The inspections required an all-hands effort, and when one school was found to require immediate shoring, our team worked quickly with school officials and the appropriate partners to address the issue.

Safety has always been our top priority. When our communities need us, we’re ready to respond.

We just had to share these incredible shots from of the new Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Hampton Roads District Operations Facility in Suffolk!

Located on a 22-acre site, the new 86,000 SF facilities brings together Administration, Shop, and Storage functions to support VDOT’s Hampton Roads operations.

The Administration areas include offices, training rooms, conference rooms, and other support spaces, while the Shop & Storage areas make up the majority of the facility and feature vehicle repair and service bays, wash bays, a welding shop, equipment storage, oil storage, waste oil collection, vehicle lifts, and more.

As the largest facility of its kind in the state, it was designed and constructed to support the people and equipment that keep Hampton Roads moving! 🚧

🚧 Progress at Plant Zero!

The v***r barrier is now installed in Area B of the parking garage at the Plant Zero project in Richmond, marking another step forward toward completion.

And don’t miss the column reinforcement detail! 👀 For a project of this scale, the reinforcement required to support the garage and the transfer podium slab for the five-story apartment tower is anything but typical. Our structural team designed the details to meet the demands of this large-scale project while maintaining efficiency and constructability in the field.
