⚡ ALLEN'S TAKE: Yesterday's Make the Call Monday answer!

The scenario: a 3,000 HP synchronous motor had more sparking than usual at the slip rings, and the brushes were wearing faster than normal.

Our call: B + C.

Sparks at the slip rings are a warning sign, not the problem itself. Check the brushes, springs and ring surface now, and make sure the field and excitation settings are right. Waiting until the next shutdown can turn a brush problem into a ring repair. 🔧

⚡ MAKE THE CALL MONDAY!

A 3,000 HP synchronous motor is running a compressor, and an operator notices more sparking than usual at the slip rings. ✨

The brushes are also wearing faster than normal. The motor is still running fine otherwise.

A. Keep running. Change brushes at the next shutdown.
B. Inspect the brushes and rings right now.
C. Check the field and excitation settings.
D. Shut it down. Sparks = trouble.

It passed the first test. That didn't mean it was fine. 🔍

This 1500 HP motor's stator core passed its first round of testing. After burnout, our team checked it again with thermal imaging, and found hot spots about twice the allowed limit.

If we had skipped that second look, the problem would have gone right back into service under brand-new windings.

Instead, the core was fixed first, then retested, then rewound. That's the kind of detail that decides whether a repair lasts.
