The sun disrupted technology 185 years ago. A Baylor researcher helped uncover the story behind it.

Dr. Trey Cade III, Director of Baylor’s No. 3 nationally ranked collegiate aviation program, co-authored a new international study that revisits a mysterious railway delay and uncovers a historical error that went unnoticed for 185 years.

By combining scientific data with railway records and historical archives, researchers traced the incident to 1848, not 1841, revealing how solar activity interfered with early telegraph systems.

The findings highlight a vulnerability that remains relevant today, as solar activity can affect power grids, satellites, GPS, and communications systems.
