After the kitchen, there’s this.

The room where the family lands at the end of the day. Where the fire goes on when the temperature drops. Where the windows frame the Vermont landscape like a painting that changes every season. Where the light comes in long in the morning and golden in the afternoon and everyone finds their spot without thinking about it.

We put a lot of care into these spaces — and not just in how they look. In how they feel. The ceiling height that makes the room breathe. The fireplace that anchors everything around it. The windows positioned to pull the outside in. The layout that invites people to stay a little longer than they planned.

Because after all the craftsmanship and all the details, what we’re really building is time together. Game nights and quiet mornings and holidays and ordinary Tuesdays that end up being the ones people remember.

That’s what a great gathering space does. It holds all of it.

We love getting to build those rooms.

There's something we never get tired of — the moment where a centuries-old material meets a modern technique and the result is better than either one could produce alone.

Heavy timber cut with precision tools. Stone set the old way, planned with modern engineering. White cedar siding sourced from Vermont, installed with methods that give it the best chance to last another hundred years.

That combination is at the heart of everything we build. Classic materials because they belong here — in this climate, in this landscape, in this tradition of Vermont building. Modern techniques because our clients deserve the performance, the efficiency, and the longevity that comes with building at the highest level today.

It's not about choosing between old and new. It's about knowing when to honor what's always worked and when to reach for something better. The best builds live in that space — rooted in where they come from, built for where they're going.

That's the process we love. And it shows in every home we put our name on.

Spring in Vermont doesn't ease in — it arrives and puts you to work.

And we're ready for it.

With the snow off the ground and the days stretching out, it's time to turn our full attention to the exteriors. The work that waited all winter is waiting no longer. Siding. Trim. Decks. Drainage. The details that frame how a home meets the land around it.

At Boulder Ridge, that means something special. Tucked into the mountains, this build has been turning heads from the inside out — and now that the exterior is taking shape, the full picture is coming together. The kind of home that looks like it grew right out of the hillside. Because that was always the goal.

Vermont gives you the best backdrop in the world to build against. Spring just gives us back the time to do it justice.

Ask anyone where they end up at a gathering and the answer is almost always the same.

The kitchen.

It doesn't matter how beautiful the living room is or how carefully the rest of the home was designed — people find their way to the kitchen. It's where the conversations happen. Where the coffee gets made before anyone else is awake. Where the kids do homework while dinner is going. Where the stories get told that become the ones families keep.

We've built a lot of kitchens. And every time we finish one, we understand a little more why it matters as much as it does.

The materials. The layout. The way the light hits the countertops in the morning. The custom cabinetry built by hands that care about the craft. Every detail in a kitchen carries weight — because every detail gets used, every single day, for the life of the home.

These are some of our favorites. Each one different. Each one built around the people who were going to live in it.

That's what makes them special.

Boulder Ridge didn't start from the ground up.

It started with what was already there — an existing shell with good bones and a client with a clear vision of what it could become. Our job was to honor both. To take what stood, add on in a way that felt intentional rather than attached, and build something that fits so naturally into its surroundings that it's hard to imagine it any other way.

The additions came with ambition. Expanded living. Spaces designed for gathering after a day on the mountain. Warmth that comes from the materials themselves — heavy timber, natural stone, finishes that connect the interior to the landscape just outside every window.

Because this build isn't just about the structure. It's about what happens inside it. The family coming in from the cold. The fire going. The kind of cozy that only comes from a home that was built with that exact feeling in mind.

This is a ski home built for generations. Rooted in the Vermont landscape, rooted in this community, and built to hold the memories that are already on their way.

That's the build we're proud to be a part of.

There's a reason classic design never goes out of style.

Heavy timber beams. Honest materials. Spaces built around how people actually live — with room to gather, room to breathe, and details that reward the people who take the time to notice them.

For the clients we build with, this isn't about trend or timing. It's about legacy. It's about making a decision once and making it right — choosing a home that will perform, hold its character, and grow more beautiful with every passing year.

That's what we build at Roots. Not homes designed to impress for a season. Homes designed to last a lifetime and feel better at twenty years than they did on day one.

If you've spent years knowing what you want — and you're ready to build it the right way, with a team that will treat every detail like it matters — we'd love to have that conversation.

Vermont is one of the last places where building this way is still done right. We intend to keep it that way.

Coming out of a Vermont winter has a way of making you appreciate beauty all over again.

The light changes. The days get longer. And as the season shifts, we find ourselves looking back at past builds — projects that remind us why we do this work and what it looks like when everything comes together the way it should.
There’s something about quality craftsmanship in wood that holds up over time. Not just structurally — but visually. The grain. The warmth. The way a well-built timber frame or a carefully finished interior catches light differently depending on the season. It doesn’t age. It deepens.

That’s what we keep coming back to. No matter how much evolves in how we build — the materials, the technology, the methods — the simplicity of wood and honest craftsmanship stays at the front of our minds.

Because some things don’t need to be reinvented. They just need to be done right.

You won't see Ben Gould on camera often. That's not really his thing.

But catch him on a jobsite — tool belt on, problem in front of him, crew around him — and you'll understand exactly who Roots Builders is and where it came from.

Ben founded Roots with a clear vision of what a building company should be. Not the biggest. Not the loudest. Just the best version of what honest, intentional building looks like in Vermont. He knows what matters. He knows where he wants to be. And where he wants to be is out there — hands on, present, making sure the work is done right.

What makes him a great leader isn't the title. It's that he's put the right people in the right seats to carry the business forward, and he trusts them to do it. That trust runs both ways — and it shows in how this team operates every single day.

Ben built something here. A company, yes. But also a standard. A culture. A way of working that leaves every project — and every place — better than it was found.

That's the kind of leadership that doesn't need a camera.
