French & Parrello Associates (FPA) recently joined Essex County officials at Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange for the groundbreaking ceremony and announcement of the new Hoof Stock Barn that will bring zebras and additional bongos to the zoo’s African Adventure exhibit. Representing FPA at the ceremony was Michael J. Piga, LLA, RLA, Manager of Landscape Architecture and Project Manager for the new facility.

FPA was retained by Essex County to provide engineering design and construction administration services for the Africa Yard Renovation. The multidisciplinary effort includes site/civil engineering, landscape architecture, MEP engineering, surveying, geotechnical engineering, stormwater and permitting services, along with construction administration.

The project will include a new indoor area and stalls connected to the outdoor habitat, as well as animal care features such as feeding structures, waterers, climate controls and heated flooring. The design also incorporates visitor-focused improvements, including enhanced pedestrian circulation, accessible pathways, landscaping, site furnishings and lighting intended to complement the existing African Adventure experience.

John Ritchey, PE, of the French & Parrello Associates (FPA) Water Resources Department will be attending the National Dam Safety 2026 Conference, hosted by the Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO) in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Mr. Ritchey is actively involved with the organization as a member of the ASDSO Advisory Committee, contributing his experience and expertise to the dam safety community.

Conference attendees can find Mr. Ritchey facilitating Topic Table 21 on Wednesday, September 2, titled “Establishing Flood Protection and Risk During Construction.” The discussion will explore the challenges of managing flood risk during dam rehabilitation, including how project teams evaluate temporary flood protection measures, determine acceptable levels of risk, and balance safety, cost, schedule, and regulatory considerations while maintaining a dam’s critical functions during construction.

French & Parrello Associates (FPA) was retained by DMR Architects to perform structural and geotechnical engineering services for the East Brunswick Ice Arena. The facility was completed as a recreation complex designed to support community and competitive ice sports. Spanning approximately 84,000 square feet, the arena features two full-size ice rinks, locker rooms, concessions, retail and office spaces, storage areas, and spectator amenities.

FPA’s scope of work included the subsurface geotechnical investigation that provides the foundations design parameters, structural design of the foundations, slab-on-grade construction and ice rink coordination, and the building’s structural framing systems, as well as construction administration support throughout the project. Today, the completed facility serves as a premier destination for skating programs, hockey, figure skating, and community events in East Brunswick.

Projects like the East Brunswick Ice Arena give FPA the opportunity to collaborate across disciplines, solve complex design challenges, and help bring community-focused facilities to life.

French & Parrello Associates (FPA) is proud to announce that it has been selected by the City of New Brunswick, New Jersey, also known as "The Hub City,” to prepare its Municipal Stormwater Utility Master Plan.

This project represents a significant milestone for both the City and FPA. It will be the first Municipal Stormwater Utility Master Plan developed for the City of New Brunswick and one of the first of its kind in the region. The initiative will establish a strategic framework for managing stormwater infrastructure, supporting regulatory compliance, and advancing long-term community resilience.

NJBIZ has once again recognized French & Parrello Associates (FPA) as one of the Top Privately Owned Companies in New Jersey, marking another year of recognition for the firm’s continued growth and success.

Previously known as New Jersey’s Top 250 Privately Owned Companies, the annual list has become even more selective in 2026, narrowing its rankings to just the Top 100 privately owned companies in the state.

FPA earned the #70 spot on this year’s list, climbing 11 positions from its #81 ranking in 2025.

French & Parrello Associates (FPA) was retained by Essex County to help rehabilitate and restore key areas of Monte Irvin Orange Park, honoring the park’s original design by the renowned Olmsted Brothers while enhancing the space for today’s community. The County wished to restore the gardens, rehabilitate the pond, accentuate the entrances to the park, restore the softball fields, and incorporate site lighting along the main walkway.

FPA prepared construction documents to restore the northern and southern gardens to reflect the original design by the Olmstead Brothers, and reached out to the Rutgers Gardens for assistance in selecting low maintenance planting. FPA’s design also incorporated accent gateways at each entrance, featuring a 24-foot aluminum arch with the park’s name, “Monte Irvin Orange Park,” routed into the panel.

On Tuesday, August 4, French & Parrello Associates (FPA) attended the Ribbon-Cutting & Fish Stocking Ceremony at Echo Hill Pond, hosted by Commissioner John Lanza and the Hunterdon County, NJ Board of Commissioners. The event celebrated the reopening of Echo Hill Pond following the recent dam rehabilitation and featured a ceremonial fish stocking conducted by the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife.

The rehabilitation of Echo Hill Pond has included construction of a new concrete spillway, sluice gate, pedestrian bridge, and stilling basin, as well as enhancements to the earthen embankment. FPA provided design, permitting and construction support services to the County throughout this project.

Last week, French & Parrello Associates (FPA) hosted its annual Friends & Family Event, this year held at ShoreTown Ballpark, home of the Jersey Shore BlueClaws.

Employees and their families gathered in one of the stadium’s picnic areas to enjoy an afternoon of baseball, food, drinks, and great company while cheering on the BlueClaws. The event provided a great opportunity for colleagues to connect outside the office, spend quality time with their families, and enjoy a summer afternoon together.

FPA's annual Friends & Family Event is one of the many ways the firm brings employees together beyond the workplace, strengthening the relationships that make Team FPA unique.
