Looking for the next step in fluorescent technologies? With L-ANAP you can fluorescently label any protein with a single codon substitution. Genetically encoded, L-ANAP also functions as a small molecule FRET donor.

It has been used successfully in Xenopus oocytes as well as various mammalian cell lines, and, of course, in yeast.

Researchers have discovered a new class of proteins capable of blocking HIV particles from penetrating T-cells. The proteins, called cnidarins, were found in a feathery coral collected in waters off Australia's northern coast. Researchers screened thousands of natural product extracts and zeroed in on cnidarins which they tested on lab strains of HIV, discovering that cnidarins bind to the virus particles and prevent them from fusing with T-cell membranes. The next step is to refine methods for generating cnidarins in larger quantities so the proteins and interactions can be tested further.
The findings were presented April 29 at the Experimental Biology 2014 meeting in San Diego, California.

L-ANAP, (L)-3-(6-acetylnaphtalen-2-ylamino)-2-aminopropanonic acid, is an environment-sensitive fluorescent Unnatural Amino Acid (UAA). It has been demonstrated to be a useful in vitro and in vivo reporter tool for studies on protein structure, function and localization [1-4]. L-ANAP, an analogue of Prodan, can be incorporated into recombinant proteins. The ability to selectively label proteins with fluorescent probes has greatly facilitated the study of protein structure and function both in vitro and in vivo [3,6]. Current methods such as fusion proteins, protein fluorescent tagging and UAA insertion all suffer from site selectivity limitation (C- or N-terminal fusions), structural and/or functional interference from steric hindrance, and poor expression efficiency in mammalian cell lines. In contrast, L-ANAP holds significant promise for the study of protein structure and function because of its unique set of physicochemical, spectral and biocompatibility properties:
