With the Fourth of July coming up, it seemed fitting to share a few snaps from a project we're proud to been part.
The past few years we have had the privilege to work alongside a group of specialty contractors for the National Park Service on the historic restoration of areas in Independence National Historical Park for America's 250th and the Philadelphia celebration. Our workscope was anything but typical for our company, but it gave us the chance to showcase our craftsmanship and attention to fine detail while contributing to something we support.
Our first scope included rehabilitating 62 historic lamp assemblies. Each assembly consisting of 3 sections, an antique lamp, a steel lamp mount, and a steel mounting base collar. If you've visited Independence National Historical Park, you've probably walked right past these lamps without giving them a second glance. Found throughout the park's historic district around landmarks that shape our country's history. Originally designed in several century styled configurations and being made primarily of copper and brass restoring them was anything but simple. Original components were restored by hand whenever possible. When they couldn't be saved, they were recreated to original, down to the finest intricate details. Our work included brass and copper metalworking, fabricating, welding, and soldering of lamps. Repair and new fabrication of steel lamp mounting assemblies. As well as custom fabricating multiple styles of new steel mounting base collars for new wood posts.
We also repaired/rebuilt many sections of the park's fencing and gates, including the Benjamin Rush Garden, home of the Bicentennial Bell, and Signers' Garden beside Independence Hall. This included on-site and in-shop restoration, various welding and fabrication repairs, hand-crafting and forging custom components, as well as hand riveting sections. All to match the original details, dimensions, and methods.
It was a unique project that reminded us through metalworking how much craftsmanship goes into our history. We were a small part of a large project, but one that we support as Americans. It's pretty cool knowing a little of our work will remain part of Independence National Historical Park history for years to come.
