Last week we started chinking this neat cabin in southern Warren county, Mo. This was one of the last cabins, my friend and great cabin legend, Tim Kilby, re-built almost a decade ago before retiring. This cabin was part of the original house that was located just feet from where it sits today. The client had planned on chinking it himself, but life has a way of happening and getting in the way, haha, and before you know it a decade has gone by.

This farm is a beautiful place and even has two other original log structures still standing. We would love to help restore these other structures and bring this amazing farm back to the way it once looked. It’s getting very rare to find farms with several original log buildings still standing.

I just can’t help but wonder about all the memories made here over the years. The good times and the hard times. To be able to go back in time and see the children playing in the yard. The men and women working about the farm. The old folks sitting and relaxing on the front porch. To hear the sounds of the livestock foraging in the fields. The melody of rain hitting the tin roof on a stormy night. The calm voice of grandpa reading the good word before bed.

Life was way different back then. For me, some days I really wish I lived back then, but I know the Lord has placed me exactly where he wants me to be. Putting my hands on the logs of any structure makes me think of all the life they have seen. O if the logs could only speak, what stories they would graciously share.

This week we’re back in the great state of Kentucky. I got my beautiful wife down here helping me so it is all work and NO play! Haha 🤣 Last summer we built this awesome cabin and now get to re-chink it. Yesterday we got all the wiring done and started on the chinking. It’s looking amazing. We found a neat resort with a little cabin on a lake to stay in. Hopefully if we get some down time we will be able to enjoy it a little. Boy was it hot or what this week! We got a lot of sun and heat the past few days, but we definitely got a lot done. The right pen/ room of this beautiful dog trot is almost completely stacked. Today’s challenge was re-notching the full length support log for the upstairs floor joists. Not only did we have to re-notch the ends of the log, but had to cut in each pocket for the floor joists to sit in.

The original support log had too much rot damage and was structurally compromised, so we had to replace it. Funny thinking about this log, I have a lot of logs in my inventory/ bone yard, but I did not have one that would have worked as good as the log we used. You might be wondering where the log we used came from. Well my father went to a Thornhill auction a couple weeks ago and on my behalf bought a pile of log cabin logs in a barn. Out of all the logs we acquired that day, only one log would work for the spot in this dog trot. I needed a log 18’ 2” and the log from the auction was 18’ 3”. One inch in my favor. If it were one inch too short the log would not have worked.

Some might just say it’s a coincidence. Well, I’m gonna tell you I definitely believe it’s a “God thing.” I believe God provides in many different aspects in our life. Most of the time we don’t even realize it and we take so many things for granted. While I may get up everyday and work my butt off for all the things I have, I would be so arrogant and foolish to think it was all by my own doing. The truth is that the Lord is behind everything and all wealth and successes and blessings come from him. I know I owe it all to him.

This makes me think of a verse in Deuteronomy that says:

You may say to yourself, “my power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth.

While I and many of us may not be rich compared to today’s standards, we are all so wealthy and blessed in this country and in so many other different ways. Last week we started on another cabin build. So far we got the left pen all stacked and this week we will start on the right pen. This log cabin is a beautiful dog trot that we disassembled a couple years ago in the Eolia, Mo area. Our client positioned the cabin perfectly with a beautiful view of their pond. It doesn’t get much better than that! Also Notice some of the notches are freshly cut. That is because some of the logs had bad ends, so we had to re-notch them. You may think it’s easy, but let me tell you it is a lot harder than you think to make a nice tight notch. This build is truly going to make a beautiful one of a kind guest home addition to their property. Stay tuned for more progress later this week. May God bless you all with a wonderful week. 🙏

This past week the crew and I were up near Chicago working on the Barrington, Illinois cabin again. This visit we completely got the cabin wired and chinked. I absolutely love how it turned out! We had to work 12-14 hour days to make it happen, so thank goodness I had the best helpers! We had a blast singing to music while working and fellowshipping and having good conversations about God’s love on the long drive there and back. I thank the good Lord for a great client and the opportunity to save/ restore history.

We haven’t posted in a few weeks but it isn’t because we aren’t busy! These past few weeks the work days have been from sun up till sun down. Here are a few sneak peaks of the work we’ve been doing. First couple pics are the bowling green cabin reconstructed in its new location. Last couple pictures are of the barrington, Illinois cabin and the crew and I are getting it re-chinked. This past month has been a busy one to say the least! Early this past Sunday morning we got back from working on a job outside of Chicago. Last fall we took this one down, documented all bad logs, then completely rebuilt it this spring. This cabin was a really neat one to rebuild. The views we had along this beautiful lake of swans, geese, and other wildlife were hard to beat. Believe it or not, as the story goes, in the 1930’s this cabin was moved to its modern location from a farm across the lake. The movers waited for winter and with a hard freeze they drug it across the thick ice with a team of horses and skids. This cabin is the first cabin we’ve ever worked on that had logs going up the entire gable ends, a feature we very rarely ever see in Missouri, but is more common in northern Illinois and Wisconsin. Soon we will be back up to re-chink it and make it look a little more finished.

The other project we posted pictures of was a cabin we took down a few weeks ago in Bowling Green, Mo. Originally this cabin was probably used as a crib barn for corn or grain. This cabin too was moved to its present location in downtown Bowling Green around 30 years ago. It was used as a shed cabin by our client to sell antiques out of. The client is no longer selling antiques out of the cabin, so she wants to preserve it by moving it back to where it came from, which just so happens to be her family farm. Our client is so excited to have one of the original log structures going back to the family farm, where it can be fully restored and appreciated for many more generations to come. Stay tuned for progress on both projects…..

O and btw we have about eight more cabins on the books to rebuild this year alone, so keep watching us and following us to see these historic structures live on. God bless 🙏
