☀️ Slate roof? Solar can still be an option.

This is a recently completed a beautiful solar installation on a slate roof for Bill and Carol, and we’re grateful for the trust they placed in our teams.

Slate roofs require extra care, experience, and the right installation approach — but they do not automatically rule out solar. With a proper assessment and a skilled team, many slate roof homes can safely and successfully benefit from clean, renewable energy.

If you have a slate roof and have been told solar “won’t work,” or you’re simply unsure where to start, we’d be happy to help.

Reach out today for a free personalized roof assessment and solar potential report. We’ll take a close look at your roof, your energy goals, and your property’s solar potential so you can make an informed decision with confidence.

🌞 Your roof may have more solar potential than you think.

A new Visual Capitalist map shows where electricity prices jumped the most in America, with Maryland seeing the largest increase nationwide: 89% over the past year. That matters here in DC because we share the same regional power market pressures across the Mid-Atlantic.

In Washington, DC, the Office of the People’s Counsel found that PJM capacity market changes could add about $10 per month to the average residential electric bill starting in 2025 — roughly a 9% increase, before other utility costs are factored in.

For families, seniors, renters, small businesses, and nonprofits, these increases are not just numbers — they affect monthly budgets, housing stability, and energy security.

The takeaway: energy efficiency, weatherization, solar access, and consumer protections are more important than ever. Lowering demand, improving buildings, and helping residents navigate bills can reduce strain while DC works toward a cleaner and more affordable energy future.

💡 Rising electricity costs are a local affordability issue. Let’s make sure DC residents have the tools, protections, and support they need.

Protect your solar investment — without changing the look of your system.

Check out this recently completed critter guard installation for one of our solar clients in partnership with EcoSun Wash, and the results are seamless, clean, and nearly invisible.

Critter guards help keep birds, squirrels, leaves, and debris from getting underneath your solar panels, reducing the risk of wiring damage, nesting, buildup, and costly service calls. It is a simple upgrade that can help protect your system for years to come.

Clean look. Long-term protection. Peace of mind.

Will your solar panels work during a power outage?

A lot of solar homeowners are surprised by the answer:
Not always.

Most standard grid-tied solar systems are designed to shut down when the utility grid goes down. This is called anti-islanding, and it’s an important safety feature. It prevents solar systems from sending electricity back onto power lines while utility crews are working to restore service.

That means even if the sun is shining, your panels may not power your home during an outage unless your system includes the right backup equipment.

To use solar during an outage, a home typically needs:

Battery storage to hold energy for later use
Backup-capable equipment that can safely disconnect from the grid
A critical loads panel if you only want to power essentials like the fridge, lights, internet, outlets, or medical devices

This is why two homes with solar can behave very differently during a blackout. One system may shut off completely, while another may keep essential appliances running.

Solar is a great first step toward energy independence. Understanding how your system responds during an outage is what turns it into a true resilience plan.

In DC, many rowhomes and commercial buildings have flat roofs — but solar panels are often installed at a slight angle.

Why?

Because the tilt helps panels capture more sunlight, shed rainwater, reduce dirt buildup, and avoid sitting in standing water.

On flat roofs, installers can often choose the panel angle and direction instead of being limited by the roof slope. That gives the system designer more control — but it also means the layout has to account for spacing, wind, roof access, drains, vents, and shading from nearby buildings.

So when you see solar on a flat DC roof, there’s more strategy involved than it may seem.

It’s not just “put panels on the roof.”
It’s a design puzzle: sunlight, space, safety, structure, and long-term roof health all working together.

A few smudges on the roof? We prefer to call them proof of progress 😄

This pitched-roof solar install came in just under 8 kW, which can make a real impact over time. Depending on sunlight and usage, a system this size can offset roughly 10,000–12,000 kWh of electricity per year—helping reduce the home’s carbon footprint while keeping more money in the homeowner’s pocket.

And the best part? This system was installed for free to the homeowner.

Clean energy, real savings, and a roof with a little character ☀️🏡

🌍 We missed Earth Day… but the planet didn’t miss us.

Earth Day isn’t a deadline—it’s a reminder. A quiet nudge that every choice we make leaves a mark, whether we notice it or not.

Right now, somewhere:
🌱 A tree is growing through cracked concrete
🐝 A bee is doing work that keeps entire ecosystems alive
🌊 The ocean is absorbing more than it should

And here we are—scrolling, working, living—connected to all of it more than we think.

So instead of a single day, what if we treated this like a reset?

Not perfection. Just awareness:
– Choosing less waste when it’s easy
– Paying attention to what we consume
– Respecting the spaces we move through
– Supporting things that give back, not just take

The truth is, the Earth doesn’t need one perfect day. It needs millions of small, consistent decisions.

We may have missed the date—but we didn’t miss the chance.

🌎 Every day is Earth Day if we decide it is.

Did you know dirty solar panels can silently drain your energy production year after year? ☀️

We recently cleaned the solar system at our own CEO Marcus's home in Washington DC — 38 panels across 2 arrays on a residential rooftop. Before we cleaned, the system had 15–20% panel soiling from organic debris and urban pollution, and annual production had slipped from 13,365 kWh in 2022 down to around 10,479 kWh by 2024. That's a 21% drop — just from dirt.

The good news? Zero structural issues. Cables in good condition. Nothing a professional clean couldn't fix. 💪

Now we're tracking the post-cleaning data on a real system to show our customers exactly what a difference it makes — in real kWh, real savings, real results.

We don't want to give you estimates. We want to give you facts.
Stay tuned for the full case study — coming soon! 🌿

How do you know if going solar actually makes sense?

It starts with a savings report. We look at how much electricity you currently use, then create a custom system design to estimate how much energy solar would produce for your home.

From there, we compare your usage with the projected production — and that’s how we’re able to predict your potential savings in a clear, data-driven way.

So by booking a complimentary assessment, you’ll have a real answer on hand — not just a guess.

For example, in Washington DC, homeowners with Pepco are currently paying around 16¢ per kWh on average — and often more depending on fees.

With solar, the electricity your system produces can effectively cost you $0 per kWh. That’s where the savings come from — every unit of energy your system generates is energy you don’t have to buy from the utility.

The more of your usage you offset with $0 electricity, the more you save.

And since electricity rates will only keep going up, it’s worth looking into it now to see if it makes sense to lock in your energy costs.
