☀️ A new solar chapter for Mary’s DC home!

Mary’s flat-roof home, located in a historic district, qualified for the free solar program available to eligible DC homeowners and businesses.

Her new 6.16 kW solar system is expected to offset approximately 93% of her annual electricity usage—dramatically reducing the portion of her Pepco bill tied to energy consumption and helping protect her household from future electricity rate increases. Standard Pepco connection and service charges will still apply, but the long-term savings could be significant.

The impact goes beyond Mary’s household budget. By generating clean, renewable energy from her own rooftop, Mary will also reduce her home’s carbon footprint for years to come. 🌱

☀️ Heatwave + Solar Panels: What Homeowners Should Know

Good news: your solar panels are built to handle hot, sunny weather. You usually do not need to do anything special to “protect” them during a heatwave.
That said, extreme heat can slightly reduce solar panel efficiency. Solar panels need sunlight to produce energy, but very high temperatures can make them operate a bit less efficiently. So if you notice a small dip in production during extreme heat, that can be completely normal.

A few smart tips for solar homeowners:
✅ Check your monitoring app to make sure your system is producing normally
✅ Keep your inverter and battery area well-ventilated
✅ Avoid spraying cold water on hot panels during the middle of the day
✅ Do not cover your panels — they are designed for direct sunlight
✅ Use major appliances during sunny hours to get the most value from your solar energy

And most importantly, do not climb on the roof during extreme heat. If something looks off, contact your solar provider.

It’s HOT out there… and while we’re all grateful for fans, air conditioning, and cold drinks, humans were surviving heatwaves long before electricity existed.

So how did people stay cool in ancient times?

🏛️ Ancient Romans built homes with thick stone walls, shaded courtyards, and flowing water features to cool the air naturally.

🏜️ People in the Middle East used wind towers, tall structures that caught breezes and pushed cooler air into buildings. Basically, ancient air conditioning.

🌿 In hot climates around the world, people planted trees, used vines, and built homes with deep shade to keep the sun off walls and windows.

💧 Evaporative cooling was another trick. Wet cloths, fountains, clay pots, and breezy spaces helped cool the air as water evaporated.

👕 Loose, light-colored clothing also made a huge difference by reflecting sunlight and allowing air to move around the body.

The big lesson? People worked with nature instead of fighting against it.

Today, we have modern technology — but the smartest homes still use the same basic principles: shade, airflow, insulation, and smart energy use.

Summer heat can make electricity bills climb quickly, especially when air conditioning, fans, refrigerators, and appliances are working harder than usual. The good news is that you do not need expensive upgrades to start saving.

Whether you have solar panels or not, these simple habits can help lower your energy use and keep your home more comfortable.

1. Use your AC wisely
Set your thermostat around 75–78°F when possible. Clean or replace filters regularly so your system does not have to work harder than it should.

2. Keep the heat out
Close blinds, curtains, or shades during the hottest part of the day, especially on windows with direct sunlight. This helps your home stay cooler naturally.

3. Run appliances at better times
Use washers, dryers, dishwashers, ovens, and pool pumps early in the morning or later in the evening when your home is cooler. If you have solar panels, run these appliances during sunny hours to use more of your own solar power.

4. Avoid heating up the kitchen
On very hot days, skip the oven when you can. Use a microwave, air fryer, slow cooker, or outdoor grill to reduce indoor heat and help your AC work less.

5. Use fans correctly
Fans use much less electricity than AC and can help you feel cooler. Just remember to turn them off when you leave the room, since they cool people, not empty spaces.

6. Stop energy waste
