Today is World Sickle Cell Disease Day.

SCD is the world's most common inherited blood disorder, affecting an estimated 7.75 million people globally and 515,000 newborns each year. Nearly 80% of cases occur in sub-Saharan Africa, where access to screening and lifesaving interventions remains limited.

Through the Consortium on Newborn Screening in Africa (CONSA), ASH has supported newborn screening and clinical capacity-building efforts in seven countries across sub-Saharan Africa. To date, CONSA has screened more than 200,000 newborns for sickle cell disease, helping connect infants and families to early diagnosis and care. Donations to the ASH Foundation have also helped advance SCD awareness, education, and care.

Together, these efforts are helping improve outcomes for individuals and families affected by sickle cell disease worldwide.

🩸 Stronger laboratories mean faster diagnoses and better outcomes for children with sickle cell disease.

With support from the ASH Foundation, at the 2026 CONSA Laboratory Summit, more than 35 laboratory professionals, clinicians, and stakeholders from across the seven CONSA countries came together to share best practices in newborn screening, explore emerging technologies, and strengthen the quality of sickle cell disease diagnosis. The former Minister of Health of Uganda also joined the meetings and expressed support for efforts to expand newborn screening for sickle cell disease.

The summit provided an opportunity for participants to exchange knowledge, address common challenges, and collaborate on strategies to improve laboratory systems and diagnostic capacity for sickle cell disease across sub-Saharan Africa. By investing in training, innovation, and regional collaboration, CONSA is helping expand access to early diagnosis and connect more children and families to timely, lifesaving care.
