This morning Harshman Engineer Sam Carroll was invited to teach a session of the introductory water resources class at Washington & Jefferson College. The students get to hear about our role as municipal engineers and were given a peak into the unseen world of infrastructure beneath their feet on campus.

Answers can never come quickly enough for those effected by flooding in their homes and businesses, Harshman CE Group works with local leaders to find answers to difficult problems. Solutions must not only fix the immediate problem, but also cost effectively use taxpayer dollars, comply with laws that protect our environment, a most importantly... when it comes to flooding, not make the problem worse for someone else. We cannot change the rain, what we can control is how we manage it once it falls.

It’s time to do whatever we can do NOW to help alleviate the constant flooding in Washington County. Yesterday, I met with City of Washington Mayor JoJo Burgess, City Councilman Ken Westcott, and City Engineer Sam Carroll to discuss both short-term and long-term ideas.

We love when technology can help us to better understand local history! Working with Terri from Harshman CE Group, LLC we were able to piece together, in a storymap, the land patents, deeds and local history of the land that exists today as the 15-acre Gilfillan Farm owned and operated by the Historical Society of Upper St. Clair.

3 years later! Rarely do we get to see project long after they've been completed. This landowner was kind enough to send in photos of his stream restoration photo now three years after construction. This timelapse shows before, immediately after construction, and now after three years of growth.

If you have a stream on your property that's eroding and looking unsightly, reach out to us for help! Streams are highly regulated complicated systems. Doing work without permits could lead to having to redo what you've just finished and go through a lengthy retroactive permitting process. Make sure you know what you need before you hire a contractor or start working.
