Yes, solar works here in winter. No, it does not work like July.

December and January are the quietest months for any array in the Pacific Northwest. Short days, thick cloud, low sun. Your production drops and that is entirely expected.

A couple of things people find surprising: panels still generate in diffuse light, so an overcast day is not a zero. And cold is actually good for panel efficiency, it is the lack of light that limits you, not the temperature.

The design assumption is annual, not monthly. Summer surplus banks credits that carry the winter. If anyone promises you steady output through a Vancouver January, that should tell you how carefully they have read our weather.

If the discount expires tonight, it was never a discount.

Pressure is the oldest tool in the solar sales kit. Sign before I leave. This price is only good today. The incentive is about to vanish. Incentive programs genuinely do change, but they change on published schedules, not at 9pm on the evening a stranger happens to be in your living room.

Here is the test we would apply to any contractor, including us: leave the proposal, and be reachable next week when the homeowner has questions. A company that is confident in its numbers does not need a countdown clock.

Take the quote. Compare it to others. Talk it over with your family. If someone will not let you do that, you have learned something useful about them.

Before you put solar on it, ask an honest question about your roof: how many years does it have left?

Panels are built to last decades. If the roof underneath them is not, you are looking at removing and reinstalling the entire array so a roofer can work, and that is a cost nobody enjoys paying twice.

The rule of thumb we use: a roof with well under a decade left should be replaced first. A roof with plenty of life ahead is fine to build on. The middle ground genuinely needs a look rather than a guess, and that is where an honest installer earns their keep.

We would rather tell you to call a roofer first than sell you a system now and create a problem for you in six years.

Your roof can look perfect from above and still be a poor candidate. Here is the number that tells you.

TSRF, or Total Solar Resource Fraction, measures how much of the available sunlight a given roof plane actually receives once shading and orientation are factored in. A satellite image shows you a shape. TSRF tells you what that shape will really do across a year.

It is not just a design detail either. Some incentive programs set a minimum TSRF before a project qualifies at all, which makes it worth measuring properly rather than estimating from an aerial photo.

We take the measurement on site. It is one of the reasons our proposals sometimes differ from a quote generated without anyone visiting.

Payback period is the first number every business owner asks for. It is also the easiest number in the entire proposal to bend.

Here is how it gets bent, usually without anyone technically lying.

Assume electricity prices climb faster than they probably will. Model production against a sunnier year than SW Washington actually delivers. Skip the shading from the rooftop units. Leave out the fact that the roof membrane has four years left in it and the array will have to come off and go back on.

Any one of those moves the payback figure by a meaningful margin. All four together produce a number that has very little to do with your building.

An honest commercial model uses your last twelve months of real usage, your own utility's actual rates, measured shade rather than estimated, and the real condition of the structure. Then it shows you every assumption in the open so you can argue with them.

We would rather give you a longer number that holds up than a shorter one that does not.

Every October, the same question: if the power goes out, will my solar keep the house running?

On its own, no. A grid-tied system shuts down during an outage. That is deliberate, so that line crews working on the wires are not dealing with your panels backfeeding the grid.

A battery is what changes the answer. It lets a defined set of circuits keep running while everything around you is dark. The useful conversation is not which battery, it is which circuits. Fridge and freezer? The well pump? Heat? A home office? Each answer changes the size of what you need.

Worth sorting out before the first windstorm rather than during the second day of one.

That empty strip along the top of a solar roof is not wasted space. It is required.

Fire code calls for clear access pathways on residential arrays so that crews have somewhere to stand and somewhere to cut through if they ever need to. It is one of the first things an inspector checks, and one of the more common reasons a layout gets rejected and redrawn.

It also explains something that confuses homeowners comparing quotes: the real number of panels your roof holds is smaller than a satellite view suggests. If one proposal fits noticeably more panels than everyone else, ask how the setbacks were handled before you assume it is the better deal.

Straight answer for any farm or rural business owner who has been asked about REAP lately.

The USDA is not currently accepting REAP grant applications. Guaranteed loan applications are still going through.

We are telling you this because we would rather be the ones who said it than have you build a budget around a grant window that is not open. If somebody is quoting you a project that depends on REAP grant money landing, ask them when they last checked the program status.

What is still worth doing right now: get your paperwork position sorted. Registrations, entity details and twelve months of energy usage all take longer to assemble than people expect. Having that ready means that if the grant window reopens, you are submitting rather than scrambling.

And the loan route has not gone anywhere. For some operations that is the better fit regardless.

A commercial roof is never the clean empty rectangle it looks like on a satellite image.

Go up there and you find rooftop HVAC units, exhaust fans, plumbing vents, skylights, a roof hatch, and the walkway paths that let a technician reach all of it safely.

Every one of those objects throws a shadow. Those shadows move across the day and shift with the seasons. A layout drawn without accounting for them looks great in a proposal and quietly underperforms for twenty-five years.

There is a second issue people miss: access. If you fill the roof edge to edge, you have just made your HVAC contractor's next service call considerably harder and more expensive. We leave working clearance around equipment for a reason.

So we design around what is genuinely up there. Real shade measurement, real layout, real service paths. Sometimes that means fewer panels than a competitor proposed. It also means the array produces what we said it would.

There is a safety system on your roof you will probably never see work. That is the point.

Rapid shutdown drops the voltage across a solar array within seconds of power being cut, so that if firefighters ever need to be on your roof, they are not working around live DC conductors. It is required by code, and it is one of the least glamorous parts of an install.

It is also one of the most telling. Rapid shutdown done well is completely invisible to you. Done badly it throws nuisance faults, and in the worst case it does not perform when it is genuinely needed. It is a fair thing to ask any installer about before you sign.
