SCRAP FACT FRIDAY

57 million tons of iron and steel scrap went into American furnaces last year. That is not a rounding error in the supply chain. That is the supply chain.

72 percent of the steel made in this country comes out of an electric arc furnace, and those furnaces do not run on ore. They run on what people bring to yards like ours.

Nearly a third of that steel goes straight into construction. The rebar in the bridge, the beam in the building, the frame in the car. Most of it started as somebody's old appliance, old fence, old car.

Every pound that crosses our scale is a pound that goes back to work.

Honest weight, fair price, straight answer.

Before you load the truck, here is the short version of what we cannot take.

Sealed containers. Propane bottles, oxygen and acetylene cylinders, welding cylinders, fuel tanks and cans that have not been drained. Propane tanks need the shut off removed or an adequately sized inspection hole.

Anything with a cathode ray tube. Old tube televisions and computer monitors.

Catalytic converters. Regulated, so we are not permitted to buy them loose.

Lithium-ion, Ni-Cad and household batteries. Cracked or leaking batteries that are not bag sealed.

Loads mixed with tires, wood, concrete, brick, dirt or trash. Mixed loads can be rejected at the gate, or come with a handling and disposal fee.

Everything else, drive it onto the scale at 225 East Aurora Street, Waterbury. Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 4:15 pm. The full exclusion list is on our site, and if you are not sure about something, call first: 203.753.4146.

Scrap handling should not be something your plant manager has to babysit.

Albert Bros. builds programs around how a facility actually runs. Container placement sized to your volume, scheduled pulls so production is never stacked up behind a full box, dedicated transportation, and weights you can verify.

Manufacturing, aerospace and defense, construction, demolition, medical, automotive, electronics. Steel grades, aluminums, coppers, brasses, stainless, aerospace alloys and precious metals.

Every inbound load is inspected against our scrap quality program using specialized equipment. That protects your material and it protects our yard.

Need a box moved or a first pull scheduled? The pick-up request form is on albertbros.com, or call 203.753.4146.

Garage full of scrap you have been stepping around all summer? Old appliances, aluminum siding, copper pipe, brake rotors, that pile of pipe behind the shed.

Not sure what you have? A magnet is a decent first test. If it sticks, the metal contains iron. Steel appliances, drums, shelving and strapping all fall in that group. If it does not stick, you may be holding aluminum, copper or brass, which carry more value per pound.

Bring it in either way. No appointment. Drive onto the scale, we weigh it, we sort it, you get paid.

The Recycled Materials Association reports that about 75 percent of steel is made from recycled material.

Not a trace amount. Most of it. The beam in a building, the frame of a car, the appliance in a kitchen. Steel does not lose strength when it goes around again, which is why it keeps going around.

That is what is happening on the other side of our scale.

Today we celebrate the dads who taught us more than just how to work hard - they showed us how to work with integrity.

To the fathers who passed down the value of an honest day’s work, who taught us to treat people right, and to always take care of family - your example is the foundation of everything we do.

At Albert Bros., we’re proud to work with so many Dads who live by those same values.
Happy Father’s Day to you all.

Did you know aluminum can be recycled infinitely without losing quality?

A soda can dropped into recycling today can be on a shelf again in 60 days. Steel, copper, and brass can also be recycled indefinitely. Plastic, by contrast, degrades each cycle and most of it ends up in landfill within two or three rounds.

This is why metal recycling matters more than people realize. We've been at it in Waterbury since 1895.
