The kitchen from our recent Somerville project.

••
If you want a fast tell of quality, check the lines.

When every surface and material runs dead parallel to the next, that’s not luck. That’s the result of a methodical framing process - making sure floor, walls and ceiling are flat, level, and plumb.

Some think great finish work can hide bad framing. In reality, it only exposes it.

I’m excited to share that our longest running project —a website update— is finally complete!

I started working on this over 2 years ago but due to reasons that will remain unnamed (chronic procrastination), I just finished it within the past couple months. A much better reflection of the work we do now. Hope you will check it out! (Link in bio)

Last week, we delivered our Somerville project to our very patient homeowners.  Move-in day was exactly 2 years to the day of our initial OAC kickoff meeting… a testament to either what an undertaking this was or how slow I am.

Studios dubbed this project because much of the scope/program revolved around creating a basement workshop space.  Ultimately, this meant moving the house and replacing its foundation (a process I detail in this month’s Journal Of Light Construction).   We also tore out and replaced all the floor systems, built a new roof inside of the original, and resheathed the building with plywood.  You might call this a renovation but there is so little left here from the original, it feels more like new construction.    We even replaced the dirt (no joke).

More pics to come (after my vacation).

Last year’s primary suite addition project in Lincoln.

This was the first phase of a two phase project, which will ultimately transform what was a tired, old ranch into one of the coolest houses in town (completely unbiased opinion).

The second phase will see the garage/connector you see at the right torn off and replaced with a barn-like structure, among other interior renovations.

In the three months since we installed this Ipe decking, its color has changed from a rich brown to the faded brown/blonde color you see here.

Pretty soon it will be fully gray (much like my hair). While some might call this weathered, I call it distinguished.

I’ve been told that this kitchen we did with is a finalist in this year’s put on by …
One of 40 finalists from over 1600 entries worldwide (not too shabby).

This kitchen has so many great details, and everyone (myself, Karen, homeowners) was feeling so good about the kitchen by the project’s end that we even debated whether to do the stained glass insert. Fortunately, it was a passing hesitation because, as soon as it went in, it became the star of the show.

Fingers crossed for first place.

Alas, the 10’+ slab of marble that runs through the tub alcove and into the shower was larger than we could do in one slab. Short by a few inches.

Our solution was to bury the seam behind the shower glass and since did such a great job on the pattern matching, you’d never know it was two slabs.

Sharing another picture from our recent Lincoln project and another winning combination… this one being board form concrete + Ipe decking.

If you look at this project’s story highlights, you’ll see we did three different samples of wood for the board form and ultimately settled on the skip sawn barnboard I found at a very exclusive lumber supplier, .

Cedar cladding with copper accents from our recent Lincoln project. I don’t think this combination will be going out of style anytime soon (or ever).

More pictures of this fantastic project coming soon.
