DUNN COUNTY FATAL CRASH

Where: ND Highway 22 near mile marker 123.5, approximately 17 miles north of Killdeer
When: Thursday, February 5, 2026, 5:45 a.m. Mountain Time
Road Conditions: Wet
Weather Conditions: Dry
Crash Involvement: CMV/CMV
Type of Crash: Head-on
Agencies Involved: NDHP, Dunn County Sheriff’s Office, Dunn County Emergency Manager, Killdeer Ambulance, West Dunn Fire Department
 
Vehicle No. 1: 2020 Volvo Tractor Trailer hauling production water
Driver No. 1: Male, 57, Watford City, fatality
Restraints: Seatbelt in use
 
Vehicle No. 2: 2019 Kenworth with a hot oil tank, towing a pup trailer containing production water
Driver No. 2: Male, 51, Dickinson, fatality
Restraints: Under investigation
 
NARRATIVE: On Thursday, February 5, 2026, at approximately 5:45 a.m., a 2020 Volvo Tractor Trailer hauling production water was traveling southbound on ND Highway 22 near mile marker 123.5. A 2019 Kenworth pulling a pup trailer was traveling north near the same location. The Volvo crossed the center line while maneuvering a curve in the road and struck the Kenworth head-on. Both drivers died at the scene.
 
A minimal amount of production water was released due to the crash. Highway 22 northbound from mile marker 119 to mile marker 130 was closed until 3:00 p.m. Mountain Time following the crash.
 
The crash remains under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
