This custom 14 mm Poly Chain timing belt pulley showcases how CNC turning, CNC milling, and CNC gear hobbing work together to produce complex, high-performance components.

Using CNC turning, we’re able to machine critical diameters and bore features for exceptional concentricity and precision. Our CNC milling capabilities create the spoke windows, mounting features, bolt patterns, and intricate machined details, while precision gear hobbing produces the accurate timing belt tooth profile. The finished component is then completed with a Teflon hard anodized coating for demanding food industry applications.

Precision matters—especially in semiconductor applications.

This custom 128-tooth gear was machined from 303 stainless steel and required multiple detailed features, tight tolerances, and careful precision throughout the process.

One challenge on this part was machining a thin wall section while maintaining dimensional accuracy—a great example of the quality and attention to detail precision manufacturing demands.

Fresh out of McHenry High School’s machining program, Kooper is already putting his skills to work as a machinist at HM Manufacturing. With a strong work ethic, eagerness to learn, and enthusiasm for taking on new challenges, he’s a great addition to our growing team.

One of Kooper’s favorite parts of the job is the challenge of finding the right part or order and helping keep production moving smoothly — because in manufacturing, every day brings something different.

When he’s not at HM, you can probably find him out on the golf course. ⛳️

No print? Worn sample? Weird geometry that makes everyone else nervous? 👀

We love a challenge.

For this project, our team took a customer-provided sample and reverse engineered it into a fully manufacturable component — balancing tight tolerances (within just a few thousandths), complex features, and heat treatment planning to make sure the final part performed exactly as intended.

Not all spline shafts are created equal. ⚙️

These custom spline shafts required a combination of precision machining, heat treating, and finish grinding to achieve tight tolerances and repeatable performance. After heat treat, the shafts were precision ground to hold a tolerance within a tenth, while maintaining critical geometry across multiple features.

Additional processes included:
✔️ Precision ground bearing surfaces
✔️ Threaded features
✔️ External splines
✔️ Plunge EDM hex in the bore for internal drive geometry

Projects like this are where process control and attention to detail make all the difference, especially when heat treat movement, concentricity, and final fit all have to work together.

From machining to finishing, this is the kind of precision manufacturing our team takes pride in every day.

Not your average shaft and not your average process. ⚙️

This custom shaft was machined from ETD 150 and built for a demanding application. Between the tight tolerances, a custom spline , and the long keyway with additional keyway features, this part required a lot of planning and precision from start to finish.

Harder material and tighter specs always bring challenges, but that’s where our team does its best work—figuring it out, dialing it in, and getting it done right.

Not every career path starts with experience—some start with curiosity.

Alex joined HM Manufacturing in 2018 right out of high school after developing an interest in manufacturing early on. What began as curiosity—sparked by seeing complex components like planetary gears—has grown into a role supporting CAD, Quality, and Engineering.

Today, Alex helps turn prints into finished parts used in demanding, real-world applications. His growth reflects what’s possible with consistency, a willingness to learn, and taking on new challenges over time.

Precision where it connects. This straight edge spline, machined from 6061 aluminum, is designed for clean engagement in motor and pump couplings—keeping everything aligned, efficient, and reliable.

While it may look simple, every feature has a purpose. This one even serves as an assembly tool for a custom shaft, proving that even the supporting pieces play a critical role in the bigger picture.
