Wildfires and prescribed burns can make for some really captivating photos and videos, but flying drones or unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) within or near wildfires and prescribed burns could cause injury or death to firefighters and hamper their ability to protect lives, property and natural resources.

In the case of a wildfire, fire officials will suspend all aerial firefighting, allowing fires to grow larger, until unauthorized drones are clear of the area.

If you see a drone flying or an operator within the area of ongoing fire operations, dial 911 immediately.

This reminder is coming ahead of a weekend forecast that includes chances of rain along with windy conditions and dry vegetation in some parts of the state, which may create elevated fire danger.

Rainfall can cause the public to become more lax with burn piles and think conditions are safe. But leaves, grasses and pine needles in sandy soils, can dry out quickly and turn into hazardous conditions in a matter of a day. Even after a light rain, the fire danger can elevate quickly this time of year prior to vegetation greening up

Nearly 40 wildfires have occurred in the last week. Know the local fire danger and check for DNR burn restrictions prior to any burning: https://apps.dnr.wi.gov/wisburn/ #/BurnRestrictions
