Nobody was hired to move parts from one place to another, and yet that is how a lot of shifts get spent.

Pick and place is the highest-repetition, lowest-judgment work in most plants, which makes it both the most automatable and the most commonly overlooked. It rarely feels like the impressive project. It is usually the one with the clearest payback.

Joining is where variation becomes permanent.

A loose fastener, a cold weld, or a bead placed slightly off is not a cosmetic issue. It is a part that passed through your building and will fail somewhere else, months from now, with your name on it.

Most unreliable robot cells are not robot problems. They are presentation problems.

A robot repeats the same motion perfectly. If the part is not where the program expects it, in the orientation the gripper expects, the cell faults. Then it gets called unreliable, and the robot takes the blame for something happening upstream.

Feeding and presentation is the least glamorous part of a cell and the most common reason one underperforms.

Automation multiplies whatever it touches. That is the whole thing in one sentence, and it is why a good robot on an unstable process makes the problem faster and more expensive instead of solved.

Most manufacturers we walk through do not have a technology problem. They have a sequencing problem. They are asking whether they can afford a robot when the real question is whether the work is repeatable enough for a robot to do it well.

Readiness has very little to do with how new your equipment is. Lines running forty year old presses are often excellent candidates. Newly renovated lines often are not.

The most expensive thing in many plants is a skilled operator standing in front of a machine, waiting to load it.

Machine tending is usually the first automation project for a reason. The parts are consistent, the motion is predictable, the work is hard to keep staffed, and the cell justifies itself without redesigning the line.

The part that separates a good tending cell from a frustrating one is not the robot. It is the error recovery, the reject part strategy, and how parts accumulate between stations.

A human inspector checking every part is not inspection. It is sampling with extra steps.

Tote induction is where a lot of fulfillment lines slow down. Depalletizing, closing lids, and scanning barcodes are three manual touches on every tote, and every one of them is a chance to lose a scan or a minute.
