When it comes to cold weather and your home one of the most important things for you to know is how to shut off your water. If you are unfortunate enough to have a pipe burst then you need to act quickly to minimise the damage.
First, long before the temperature drops you need to know where your water shutoff valves are. Most houses have 2. One is the city water meter valve and the other is the house valve. Let’s start with the city shutoff valve since every house will have one. This will be located very close to the curb, usually under a cover that is marked “city water department” or something similar.
Some municipalities don’t like the homeowner accessing this valve but honestly if it comes down to upsetting the city or letting my house flood, guess which one I’m going with, of course the choice is ultimately yours. To access this valve you might need a tool like the one pictured to slot into the lid and remove it. There might be an antenna attached to the lid so be careful not to damage or break the wires. Underneath this cover you will find a meter and a rectangular valve k**b. Put your curb key over this k**b and turn it clockwise until it stops.
If a tragedy like this strikes make sure to let us know, during times of disaster we like to make sure members of our community are taken care of and will work with you to get your home and life back to normal.
