Stewards: Stories and Perspectives On American Agriculture

Stewards: Stories and Perspectives On American Agriculture Have you ever wondered why a wheat farm in Kansas is 5,000 acres or how a young farmer can be successful on just 1 acre? They all tell their stories here.

Want to know why some apple growers can't go Organic or how Monsanto employees see their role? If you could ask every farmer in the United States one question, what would it be? From homesteaders and activists to multi-generation dairy farmers, politicians, and genetic engineers, the perfect system looks very different. Almost with religious fervor, points are being made and fingers pointed across

an increasingly polarized fence. Realizing that this is a remarkably important moment to document the voices of American agriculture, two curious individuals set out to record the stories and perspectives of the nation’s agriculturalists amidst shifting ideals and conflicting definitions of what a farmer’s role may be in our society. This is an oral history, into which all outlooks are welcome.

It's going to be a hard year for wheat, rice, and many other crops. Droughts in Europe are preventing spring harvests, the US land around the Mississippi River is still saturated from floods, and fuel is rising in price still. Expect some price hikes in a few months!

Here's a good interview. If you follow sustainable agriculture issues, you've likely heard of The Land Institute in central Kansas. Check out our interview and tour with Ken Warren, the director; we talk about perennial grains, overpopulation, and subsidies in the Plains.
